removing 78-1175 grease seals from rear brake hubs... what's the trick ?
no luck checking my Clymer Service Manual book and searching here only turned up supply sources or orientation during reassembly.
I have new replacements from All Ford. the fronts were straightforward but, after partially destroying one of the rears and making zero progress I'm raising the white flag. your tips and trick are greatly appreciated. TIA |

I assume you are removing the snap ring the holds the seal into place before you attempt to pull the seal. Someone may have put sealer around the edge of the seal, which complicates getting it to come loose. Some will come out if you use a large screwdriver to pry the seal, using the hub as a fulcrum. Put screwdriver between the inside of the seal and the face of the bearing. When installing the new seal, tap the seal to get it straight in the bore, the drive it in until the snap ring groove is cleared. If you don't have a driver, a good substitute is a PVC pipe coupling that just fits over the seal. Then place a wood block over the coupling and drive the seal into place. Take a seal along to a hardware store or home center to pick out the coupling you need.

One more tip when reassembling: Grind the one end of the snap ring so next time the ring will be MUCH easier to remove.

This snap ring is in a hole not on a shaft. How would snap ring pliers help?
