Default Optima 6V battery charge

On a 6V optima redtop battery, what should the testing voltage be on a 100% charged battery?

6.3 volts. 2.1 per cell.

My charger shot it up to about 7.0v and still showed charging not complete.

That sounds fine. Right after charging the voltage will be higher. After charging, let it sit for a few hours, then take a reading. Use a quality fully automatic charger not a cheap one with constant amps.

Got it figured out. My harbor freight multimeter was over a bolt off. Bought a good quality one and I am at 6.3. Thanks

Most of these smart chargers are too smart for their own good. Like if a battery gets completely discharged, they will indicate failed battery and not even try to start charging. I use an ancient Western Auto trickle charger to get the things started, and then hook up the smart one.

Very good point about the "smart" chargers. I've had the same experience.

I've had the best luck NOT keeping these batteries on the trickle charger (Battery Tender) 100% of the time. I'll put the charger on for a day or so once every month or so, but leave it at that. I think leaving AGM batteries such as the Optima on chargers 24/7 is bad for them.

I have a 12V Optima in the mustang that still works great... and is dated 02/06

Good Luck

I have used a "Battery-Tender" on several of my batter's, for many years, including AGM and/or Optama's, never had what I would call a failure. I did have a problem if I left the 'Tender' disconnected to long.

We use the Battery Tender all winter. It keeps our Optima batteries ready for the next drive. Most of our Optimas last years with no problems. Glass Mat batteries require low charging rates to prevent damage.

I am going to return the battery I think. I can’t get the battery to hold a charge. It dropped from 6.36 volts to 6.0 volts overnight. I think it has a bad cell.

My Optima typically shows 5.87 volts after sitting for awhile, but it always starts the car.
