Hello. Pete, I'm in need of a engine stand and saw pics of yours, very nice. Did you build it and if so would you share prints ? I can sketch it from the pics but the welder would need dimensions. Thanks Mike

Does anyone have an idea of the weight of a 49-53 block? I know the whole engine is 569 lbs but wondering what just the block is.

Just bought an adapter from Stumpy last week and now my 59 AB flathead is mounted and happy. Some thing about it being mounted by the bell housing just kind of bothered me.

That first pic is the style I like most, gonna have to make me one some time soon. I like the way the engine is supported giving you access to everything, including the exhaust ports on both sides for porting if you want. And you can really lean on them to strip an engine, without any fear of it tipping over.

The issue is the "leverage", there is a lot more block handing out from the bellhousing than there is from the side of the block (the center of gravity is a greater distance from the mounting points). Also, the cast material in the bellhousing mounting area is very thin. Thin and cast is not a good combination. There was a big discussion on this subject on the HAMB a few weeks back and a lot of people mount them by the bellhousing. However, they do break! My current block was broken that way and had to be repaired. I would think a look at what was used in shops that worked on flathead blocks daily would let you know the best way to go.

Edit: This is most likely not an issue with the 49-53 blocks, I was referring to the per 49 blocks. However, Ford and most of the shops still used the side mounted style.

Checked our local Craigslist for any K. R. Wilson listings in hopes of finding an engine stand base for a friend. Low and behold a Manzel stand with base and a #4005 mounting plate was listed. Yup, it followed me home. Looks like I need the #6005 mounting plate for my flathead. Quick, everyone check your local Craigslists.

I spend a lot of time porting the exhaust ports, these stands don't work well for that.

I don't bother with engine stands anymore. Got a stout wood stand roughly 2' X 2' on a mover's dolly and do my porting with the block setting on end. I find it more convenient to see into the ports and easier to work on them while I'm sitting comfortably in my tall old office chair. Do my flow bench testing set up the same way. Last assembly I did on end as well, once the crank was in. Some old photos of the Ford factory show assembly on end.
