Y-block spark plug wire routing?
Can anyone send some pictures or give a good description of the correct spark plug wire routing on the 55-59 y-block 272/312 V8.
I bought the wire loom brackets and rubber grommets from Carpenter. The kit includes two round grommets with round brackets , I know they go on the lower rear of the heads. The kit also includes two other brackets which have more rectangle shaped rubber grommets. One bracket has a longer neck on it than the other bracket. My question would be where do these two brackets mount?? Shop manual actually shows THREE of these flat grommets , and the picture is not real clear as to where they mount. So if anybody has a nice picture of the back end of a complete y-block with wiring in place , that would maybe answer my question. Thanks in advance for any help. Steve |

Re: Y-block spark plug wire routing?
Half way down are some pictures still up from Ted Eaton. I think your right about the rectangular, I’d call the other one more square than round.

You are on the right track on the right parts to use, but it has been a while since I did mine. Look up Tim McMaster on facebook and look at his pictures, I'm sure your questions will be answered.

Re: Y-block spark plug wire routing?
Guys....just as a quick follow up to my spark plug wire routing . Today I worked a bit on the y block wires. Looks like I will have to share one of the mounting bolts that also hold down the bottom part of the throttle linkage to the back of the y-block.
Not a problem , but that looks like the only option to mount this bracket/rubber grommet on the wires going to the left side of the engine. Here's a couple pictures......pictures will follow later. Last edited by steve fritz; 10-27-2019 at 02:07 PM. Reason: adding pictures now |

If you had a shop manual, it would show you many things that previous owners have left off that should be there, and the shop manual provides good illustrations and descriptions of how the parts are assembled.
Not that where're not more than happy to answer your questions, but having a '55 wagon all apart and not having a shop manual might be asking for disappointments later. It is a good learning tool. Steve, You need to look at your private messages regarding the fuel sending unit. |

Re: Y-block spark plug wire routing?
When I was detailing my 292, I went with the stock wire looms, but had a very difficult time squeezing in my 8mm wires. I'm running a Mallory Unilite distributer & a high output coil and felt the need for larger wires. So I'm still looking for a stock style looms that will accept a larger high performance wire for next time.

If you keep the insulators in the bracket (on the bench) (to hold steady) do you think you could run a drill bit through to open up the holes?

Re: Y-block spark plug wire routing?
So Taylor wires is a good option for next time, as for drilling out the rubber, I did think about it, but thought it would be too thin, and or shred the center portion out. The hard part with the larger wires was squeezing the metal brackets closed in the difficult to get to locations and start the bolts

Re: Y-block spark plug wire routing?
Yeah, the TAYLOR 7mm are for restoration whereas an 8mm would be obvious. Same protection/fird.
