Default Starter question

So, A 6V starter with the modern Cat engagement mechanism that is so highly touted, hooked up to the 12V Model A conversion for use with the larger draw items such as air conditioning and/or halogen lights. What do we suspect the half life of the ring-gear is without getting the starter switched over to 12 Volt? I'm 82. think it is a lifetime guarantee, or should I order the field coils and do it right? Hate the thought of pulling the starter past the air conditioning hoses but then it might be easier than pulling the motor to replace the ring gear and have to convert to a 12V starter down the road. Let the sparks fly.

The starter motor itself probably will work for a very long time with 12 volts.

There have been a few problems with the extra engagement force of 12 volts with a 6 volt starter have caused the ring gear to start to walk forward on the flywheel.

If this happens, it can be fixed by removing the starter and not the whole engine.

It may be worth chance to go ahead and run the 6 volt starter and see what happens.

However, to do it really right, the starter should be converted to 12 volts.

Just my opinion,

If your ring gear gets banged FORWARD, just BANG it back & SPOT WELD it.

I ran a 6vt starter on a 12 volt flathead for five years. Then had to replace bendix. Age or stress I don't know why the bendix spring broke. Went to 12 vt starter and had to replace the ring gear 6-7 years later.
There that should totally confuse the issue, Chap

These AC hoses do not get in the way of starter removal.

Mag, that isn't quite how mine are routed. Wish I had done them your way. Next time. Did you use a kit of just make up your own. I got lazy and bought Ken Davis kit. Works well so far, almost a week today. Took the bride for her first ride with air in a Model A and she seems to no be disappointed though the blower is a bit faster than she would prefer. I may look into slowing the speed a bit, Any ideas? I do have another coupe I might experiment with.

daveymc29, no I did not use a kit. I fabricated the compressor bracket myself. Uses original fan belt for water pump and Alt. Separate belt for AC. 2 groove pulley on crankshaft.

What's a "modern Cat engagement mechanism"?

Condenser and 12 volt fan are mounted behind the rear axle at a 45 degree angle!

At least with the Ken Davis Kit that I saw ...
