Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
I'm removing this from my 1928 Tudor.
As you can see, it took the place of the rear spring hold down brackets. To use the hitch, the rear tire would have to be removed. The spare tire bracket would not need to be removed. I only removed it to replace a stripped stud. I purchased the new trailer hitch that bolts between the bumberettes. With the new design, I'll be able to carry a bike rack and tow a trailer, if I ever need to. I may sell or trade the old hitch, if anyone is interested. Neil [email protected] |

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
Which hitch did you purchase? How wide is it. I am looking for a solution for my truck.
The one you took off is interesting but not for my application. |

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
I purchased the Wagner hitch
St. Louis, MO. 314-966-4444 Cost $249.95, plus shipping. It takes the place of the rear bumper cross piece. The inside lip is 29 1/4 inches. I have not installed it yet, but it looks quality and heavy duty. |

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
I have the Wagner hitch on my PU. Easy installation (15 minutes), very well built.

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
In the third picture the sticker says, " For display of flag hitches only, not intended for towing".
What is a flag hitch? I dont know that term. Thanks |

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
John LaVoy had a nice write-up in Model A Times a while back. It not only will pull a trailer nicely, but Wagner also has a device that will plug into the receiver that will hold flag(s) for use in parades, etc. The flag part will work with any 2" hitch receiver.
I would not hesitate to tow a trailer with this hitch, certainly much more than one I would piece together, which wouldn't be DOT approved either.

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
I like the Wagner but I measured my CCPU and it is not wide enough. I need approx. 42 inches. Darn

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
Does the Wagner hitch attach to the body or to the frame?
Towing a load with the body as the control and power point could be a disaster in an emergency. Like the trailer jack-knifing up along the car and twisting the body off the frame.

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
It attaches to the bumper supports, which are then attached to the frame. The hitch actually replaces the bumper spreader bar. There is a "U" shaped channel on each side that encases the bumper supports and supplies vertical support for the hitch when installed. Look closely at the pictures in post #3 above.

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
It's designed to replace the bumper spreader bar. Since Pickups never had a rear bumper, you would have to add these brackets. I had already installed a rear bumper on my CCPU, so it was a no-brainer to install the Wagner Hitch.

Re: Old Model A homemake trailer hitch
Back in 1967 my neighbor attached his trailer hitch to an 8" round plate he made for the trunk floor of his Barracuda. He then used this light car to tow a heavy enclosed 4 wheel trailer full of building supplies. One day a large hole appeared in his trunk floor and his trailer and car parted ways.
