Second owner of car, I have wiped down the 39 Lincoln Zephyr with Gibbs Oil sense I started on car, some signs of touch up paint on drivers door but nothing on trim or rubber around windows. Looks good from 20' !!!!

I painted my 1st complete at age 14. I'm now 58 and never strayed too far from that aspect, and with nearly 150 significant awards in the hands of my past clients I guess we could say I know what I'm looking at. That's a gratifying picture of the car. The interior is out, garnish moldings removed, windshield just sitting there, etc. If someone refinished this car (they didn't) then they went to a complete body removal and all the angst that goes with it. It's original paint throughout. It's going to stay that way but I won't let the surface rust continue. It will be repaired and blended in with lacquer the right way. A few dents and dings will get gently pushed back out and some minor cracks in the front fender will also be repaired.

I too love original, and nice "cared for" original is just as good if not better. I don't subscribe to the perceived "value" of rust and disrepair. If you care for your car you keep it up, keep it nice. I'm sure what I do to it will be worthy of the best internet arguments and challenges in history. I can already hear the town criers ringing their bells calling bullshit on the original finish after it's spot repaired. I can take it, and it's now my duty to keep it nice. What if it was 1941 and I needed a repair? No longer "original"?

When Dr Shepard saw this Model 60 Coupe at the Ford Exhibition in London's Albert Hall in October 1935, it was all black with silver wheels. He thought that too sombre and had the supplying dealer paint the cream side and wheels. I knew the car back in 1962 and it only took me 52 years to get my hands on it. Here it is as I saw it after 52 years.

To the day she sold it to us, her last drive....Oct 1976

Her Daughter & Granddaughter, 2013

"Bertha" still original after all these years...

Man, love the Bertha story.

Reminds me of a story. For a short time, I was an insurance adjuster. I got called out to do an estimate on a elderly lady's car. Got to her house and she open the garage. There sat an as new '72 2-door robin egg blue Ford Maverick that one of our folks rear ended. This was in the late '90's and I think the car had 32K on odometer. The interior was truly like new and she said she always garaged it since new. Boy, did it look it.

By the book, it was totaled. I called my boss and said we can't do this to her or the car. I broke out my trusty Hemmings and worked with the body shop to fix the car for the lady.

Gibbs oil... looks like a nice antique finish. Does the oil tend to fill crevices and create a better finish? I remember reading about dw40 to hid scratches?

Here is one. The hood and rear door have been repainted. Original interior, too.

Hershey had a bunch of original cars in the HPOF class. One of the more interesting collections there.

Frankwest, Gibbs is a spray for froze bolts, etc., was show this oil several years ago and have used it on several old cars, shines up the car. Only place I have found to purchase is on Ebay. If it rains on your car you have to wipe down again!!!!

An oil like this must make any tiny scratches invisible.

The old car show trick, motor oil before the show. I use wd40

If anyone leans on your car they walk away a little sticky.

I just wiped down the original dash and garnish moldings in my original '34 with GIBBS Oil....WOW! I never heard of GIBBS Oil until I started reading about it on this forum. Impressive stuff!

The gibbs oil seems to cover a multitude of surface scratches that are present on original paint cars. And it supposed to be protection for surfaces too. I think it was developed for gun protection. I learned about it from this post too. This board is great in that many great ideas come out and help others to improved their antique cars.

I enjoy greatly original paint cars but you have to agree that this totally restored and repainted with an expensive paint job looks fantastic! A new 1934 probably looked just like this in the dealership!
