1934 Steering sector rebuild problem
First off, i did a search and found several threads, But none said anything about my issue.
Have a rebuild kit from the Early Ford Store Took the steering shaft to several machine shops before i found one that would press off the worm gear, after that was done, when they tried to press the new one on it was a no go with a 60 ton press, Then they said they were going to put the worm in the oven and heat it to 600 degrees and it would go on, Well it didn't and now i'm concerned about two things. #1 worm gear is now black, not sure about hardness? #2 still won't press on shaft Has anyone ever had to turn down the shaft to fit the worm gear? and i do know about the raised key in the worm gear and the direction it fits on Any input from the pro's is appreciated Thanks Joe |

To remove a common proceedure is to cut (grind) the worm gear close to the shaft and then split it. There are several threads on the HAMB on reinstalling a new worm gear.

Re: 1934 Steering sector rebuild problem
Did the shop notice the key in the worm and the slot in the shaft. I made a pusher with a slot so I could push the shaft out without damaging anything.

It looks like they did, after studying it last nite it looks like it was somewhat cocked at the start of pressing on. |
