Default Riveting floor pans

I need to rivet the floor pan and other parts together on my 29 CCPU. There are a few places that a 3/16" brazier head 7/16" long rivet may not be quite long enough to get a nice waffle peen. I have 7/16" long steel rivets I plan to use for most places, where they are long enough. I can't find any steel 1/2" rivets, not even at Big Flats Rivet Co. I did buy some 1/2" long aluminum brazier head rivets a while back. Does anyone see any problems with using aluminum rivets on steel metal panel in some places that a 7/16" may not be quite long enough. I have heard about dissimilar metal problems, but I don't know if after painting, an aluminum rivet would pose any problems. Any help responses would be appreciated.

I just checked McMaster-Carr via your link and they don't carry brazier head rivets like used on the floorpans and other places on model A's. I have purchased items from them in the past, but not rivets, since they don't have the right kind.

If you are only needing a couple of rivets, why not turn your own on the lathe ?

Will probably take you less time than locating what you are looking for.

eystein,
Unfortunately I don't have a lathe or easy access to one.

Harbor Freight has one of those small table top lathes. Good excuse to buy one.

This company should have ANYTHING you need. Their shipping can get a bit pricey if not getting a bunch. To me, brazier head and truss head are virtually the same.

Hey Rusty,
I used all aluminum rivets to put all new floor pans in my '30 roadster...dozen years ago. No problems yet ...lasts long, works good ! Painted semi-gloss black.
Must admit that I am a neophyte and also couldn't get rivets and equipment otherwise. I'm not 'fine point' restorer either !

I think I will use the aluminum rivets in any places that I need a slightly longer rivet than 7/16" which probably is not that many. Thanks for the responses.

If a person would use a good rivit look alike . The headlight screw rivits work good for me . These screw rivets are for attaching the base plates of the seadlight buckets and they look just like rivets and are stainless steel . they come with lock nuts These screw rivets are on page 85 of Brattons catalog , part number 18280 .You get 12 screw rivits with nuts for $3.95 Most model A vender catalogs have them . I've bought 1/4 galv. carrage bolts by the pound at flee markets . I'm pretty sure some of the name brand bolt and screw companies would have them in different grades of hardness . I like this method of installing floor pans.Nobody is gona be crawling under mine to see the attaching nuts . I usually paint them semigloss or satin black

I have a 48 and 49 Piper airplane. The wing ribs are many pieces of formed aluminum assembled with steel rivets. It’s never been a proble. Thousands of them out there with no problems.
