Default Floor Boards installation Fasteners

Would anyone know the correct fasteners to secure the floorboards to the floor of the Model A body?

The fasteners that I received from a supply house are nowhere correct. They are too large.

I have created my floorboards and have them insulated and installed.

Thanks,

The holes need to be counter sunk to receive the cupped washer. What do you mean by too large? If you are talking about the cupped washers, yes that is an issue. Unless, if that is the case, there is a better supplier or you can find originals, you may need to enlarge the counter sunk hole some so they sit flat.

Thanks, the fasteners supplied were 12/24 x 1 1/4 Flat head.
In my case these are too large fasteners and will not install. The nuts that the fasteners are to thread into and very small.

Thanks,

IF your not fine points, how about drilling and tapping the nuts. If I remember correctly :-(
there’s a lot of meat to the D- nuts, I believe thats what I did.

Thanks, That helps. I just do not have a tap set in my garage. Thinking about it, that is probably my best shot. Thanks,

I am not fine points. I want a driver that I can run the tires off!!

Thanks,

I got my floor screws at Lowe's, can't remember the size off hand, but they do carry them, got the cups there too.

All of my floorboard are 12-24 threads. Are you sure that the holes are not rusted or full of paint.

I have spent the morning cleaning the fasteners. Plus the are many fasteners on the slanted piece that free and clear.

So, from all I have gleaned today, I am going to search out a tap set that contains the 12/24 tap and tap the fasteners in the body.

Thanks,
John

Tap & Die sets are quite cheap at Harbor Freight. Watch for them at Garage Sales & ask, "Got any Old Tools"?

12-24 x 1 1/8 Flat head machine screws are what Ford used. 1 1/8" are not available now, so 1 1/4"are what you get. Running a 12-24 tap through the D nuts should clean out the threads.

I agree.
12-24 is the correct size and isn't too common these days, but most hardware stores should carry a tap that size, or be able to order one.

Another point. I usually open up the holes in the floor boards with a 5/16 drill to make the line up with the fixed hole in the frame easier. The wooden floor boards shrink and expand with the weather and the stock holes are just simply too tight much of the time. Ernie

Good point, that must explain why I ended up doing the same thing to mine...
But it took me a little time to figure that one out

Weren't the original screws all bevel headed flat brass machine screws?

Today, I purchased a tap and die set from a nation wide tool seller. This tool set contained the required 12/24 tap.

I was successful in tapping three holes and successfully installed three 12/24 x 1 1/4 flat head machine screws. So, the fasteners are correct and I will be able to tap the remaining nuts and secure the floor boards.

Thank you all for your great help, suggestions, and encouragement.

D.J.,

Wow! Fifty-three posts on screws, nuts and washers for the floorboards. Who knew.

One of the first meetings my wife and I attended of our Model A club, a lady pulled us aside during the break and said "you have to be serious if you want to get into the Model A life style. It's a commitment."
