sending unit or gauge
Hi
I have a 1952 ford f2 6cyl 226 it is wired 6 volt. I have all new wiring and gauges. I just installed a new temp sending unit and hooked everything up. I did not use teflon tape when I installed the sending unit, it should be getting a good ground. When I turned the ignition on the temp gauge remains pegged at hot and does not move to the cool side of the gauge. Am I missing anything? How do I tell if I have a bad gauge or sending unit? Thanks in advance for all of your help. |

Re: sending unit or gauge
First test with a voltmeter that you have 6 volts on the correct ignition supply terminal at the back of the gauge with the ignition switch turned on. Note that ford temp gauges read in the "H" or Hot position when at rest with the ignition switch off. This is opposite to the fuel and oil gauges. Remove the wire from the sender unit and ground it to the engine block. Turn the ignition switch on and the gauge should go quickly to cold. Don't leave the ignition switch on for more than 10 to 15 seconds when testing otherwise overheating the gauge winding will result. If the gauge goes to cold during this test then it is OK and the sender unit is most likely at fault. YOU do need the correct ford matching sender unit and not just any old other type sender unit. Regards, Kevin.
