Would like to put a Ford 8" in my '36, are the rear drums 5 lug by 4 1/2" centers?

The only exception to that was those 8" rear ends used in the 70's Mustang II cars. They were 4 lug on 4 1/4".

But from what I hear, 5-lug, 5 on 4.5 inch lug pattern Ranger axles will work as replacements ???

A friend of mine just put an 8" out of a 55 Ford wagon into his 38. Should be the same chassis, it fit great.

The stock '49-'56 Ford rears are totally different than the later 8" that came out in the mid-'60s, and '55 wagons normally had the Dana/Spicer integral rear, same as F-100 trucks and most Mercs.

put a 8" under my 35 in 2000,just the right width,and not as heavy as the 9".

The Ranger is the right width but the drive centerline is off about 4 inches.

Ralph, in your 47 you can use a 67-70 Mustang 8" rear end. They go right in if you use the Chassis Engineering rear spring kit. The width is perfect.

I love the Ford banjo rearend and would never install a *' in my old Ford and I would not buy one that has been converted. I do not know your reason for this conversion. You are going to lower the value of your old Ford and will probably hate yourself in a few yeas. Most people that cut up old Fords are trying to boost their ego because somebody criticized their car.

I used a 65 fairlane 8", fit good, with parallel leaf springs, just relocate the spring mounts.

My axle is galled severly, and will need replacing soon(about three months ago). The 47 is not all orig, although it looks it to people that don't know. I would love to put it back to 100% orig, but it would take too much $$$, something I don't have right now.
She gets up and goes quick, but it is scary stopping, so I would prefer the brake upgrade to self energizing brakes as well.

I like the parallel leaf kits that are out there, the rear out of a 55 WAGON is actually a Dana 44, also used in the pickups and T-birds, the passenger cars had the more marginal rear that looked similar to the 8 inch.
