What battery is recommended a Group 1 or Group 2 for a 40 Sedan

You might want to use a 6 volt Optima in a look-a-like Ford Group 2 case.

I also have a 1940 and always thought a Group 1 was the correct battery until I tried a Group 2 and found it was the correct fit. Same in my friend's 1937 pickup.

I always had hot start problems with a Group 1 that I never had with a Group 2 (I think it was actually a "2L"). They are quite a bit larger.

The Group 1's are for "lesser" engines such as Chevrolet and Plymouth sixes (and some tractors).

The one we got from our local NAPA had a bad cell, I'd take a hydrometer and check it before you carry it home!!

I’m ok with the NAPA batteries, last one lasted 6 years and they’re less than a $100.
