Default Transmission problem on 41 ford car

I have a flathead 41 ford with original transmission and has a 1950 ford truck engine. I took it out for a drive and when I got home the transmission was stuck in 3rd gear! Transmission was replaced a while back. I disconnected linkage and still won't budge. Any ideas?

Put your general location in your profile and maybe some can recommend a local transmission expert.

Try jacking up one rear wheel (with the usual safety precautions) and rocking the wheel back and forth. Sort of rattle the trans up a bit.
Try moving the levers directly at the side of the trans. both levers, not just 2nd/top.

Lastly, if still no joy, pull the side plate and forks etc. and see what has happened.

Mart.

if you get the side cover off, look at the notch in the shift rail to see that its a nice machined, uniform looking notch and not worn on the sides. if you need a whole cover, i have too many, one could be yours for shipping.

Sounds to me like the snychro went to far forward (or would it be aft for 3rd???) and the blocks & balls popped out locking up the trans. Just a guess. You'll need to take it out or take of the side cover at least to inspect.

Be careful trying to remove the side cover with the trans in the car, may or may not come off in a '41 with trans in place.

Are you sure the engine is not locked so you can not shift out of 3rd gear ? Did you try rocking the car to see if it will free up ? JMHO

Your description is a symptom of the starter drive being locked-up with the flywheel. Even if the starter drive were locked-up, the trans should still shift. Tim Ayers' post #7 above sounds like a plausible possibility. DD

Have you tried having someone push in the clutch while you try to move the side levers on the trans?

the engine runs fine. clutch disengages transmission. only thing wrong is the transmission can not be shifted out of 3 rd gear! It stays in 3rd gear. This locked up when I was driving it so I was able to drive it home locked up in 3 rd gear.

thank you for all your responses. I think Tim Ayers comment is probably the correct diagnosis but it is the most unfortunate one. That means the transmission has to come out!
