Default starter grommet install

I am looking for the correct oval three hole rubber type grommet for the starter rod that goes into the hole in the center of the 3 holes in the firewall.

I purchased an after market one but I can't find where it says how to install it other than on the outside of the firewall for mid-1930. Did this have bolts, what size, etc., or rivets? to hold the ends on, there are no D-nuts either.

Thanks,
Kim

Do you have the metal cover for the grommet also? I used these screws https://www.brattons.com/28-29-start...screw-set.html and d-nuts that were on the firewall.

If you don't have the holes to mount the one you have it may be the wrong one.
You may need this one. https://www.brattons.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=16160

the metal cover for the 28-29 was NOT used originally. the rubber grommet was made out of some type of hard rubber. Ruth is correct with the screws.

The OP has a mid 30s car, so the link Bob C posted should be the correct grommet. No screws needed.

FWIW, our '31 has a 3 hole cover riveted on.

Katy is correct based on the year of your car. Drill out old rivets and replace with pop rivets

Good Luck

This is a picture. As far as I can tell from all your advice I need to just use the screws and nuts and bare rubber grommet on the engine side.

I think the aftermarket grommet may be too soft or slightly smaller than original based on judging guideline pictures , but not sure. If someone has one of the real hard grommets for sale please PM.

Thanks[IMG][/IMG]

Mark,

That sure looks like what I need to find. The aftermarket one was soft black rubber and is nothing like your correct one.

Thanks!

Thanks everyone. It turns out that someone in the distant past added two extra holes to what should have been just the round grommet (used from June-Nov 1930 when my car was built.

I thought it was a three hole style, but now I see the hole is way too big and no D-nuts. So I will try the round grommet and try to fill in the extra holes/slots on the side of it.

This is covered on page 506 of the service bulletins, including retrofit for the round style grommet.

Thanks for the reference. I have the service bulletins and this is interesting reading and seems to be a version not referenced in the standards between June and November 1930.

However, the side holes I have indicate something else was modified and used even later as the hole and slot are way to far apart for the metal cover in the service bulletin to fit.

The big hole is 1 inch so is correct for the original big split 1" rubber grommet June-Nov 1930 which my car is, so in theory that is all that this car should have had at the time per the guidelines.

My guess is someone modified and put a revised floor mounted starter button to the battery and starter like in many cars in the 40-50's. Thanks

The Model T's with electric starter used one of those.
