Default Horn / Light Rod in Steering Column

Out of nowhere my Horn / Light Rod in Steering rod will partially pull out as I corner and in doing so turns my horn on. Is there a clip at the end at the switch? I took it apart but see no way to make this stay in place. Thanks

There is a groove near the bottom end of the rod where a horseshoe keeper goes. This may help...

You can help hold the horn button down all the way to expose the clip groove by using a yard stick: bring it up from behind the wheel , over the button, and down to behind the wheel on the other side. Otherwise, a friend will be needed to hold it down. You'll still need to push up on the "spider" thingy to expose the groove.

The retainer sets into the grove and is held in place by a slight recess in the u shaped sector part. If this fell out you have a worn out shaft grove. it's possible to take a fine file and make the grove deeper, but you will have to compress the lock ring to compensate for the filed grove being somewhat smaller. They can be a bit cantankerous to get on. They do sell a tool to use when putting the retainer on, I found the tool less than useless to use. I hold the sector part in with a small screwdriver and put the lock ring on with my fingers. Good luck it's a fun job not really to difficult.

When you order the the horseshoe clip, get two, also get two spider's, they do break very easily. The installer tool also helps.
One thing about the new spiders, you may have to take a very small flat file to get it to fit over the horn rod freely, when they hang up going over the rod...that's when you end up breaking the tabs. The spider must be installed in the right orientation, or it won't work right. That's something you will have to figure out on your own.

If you cannot find the horseshoe clip or have to order one, you can use an e clip. Hardware stores carry the e clips. Once installed, they will work the same and cannot be seen for judging. My dad use to call then damit clips as just when you just about got them installed, they flew off to inaccesable places or you could not find them.

I agree with buying two clips, or cotter pins, or gaskets, or (well you get the idea). Without the proper tool the job usually gets very interesting. Prepare to use foul language freely if necessary.
