Screen in Gas Tank Removal
Am trying to remove the screen in my 31 sedan gas tank.
Looks like there are some indents around the top. Makes me think it will screw out but not sure. Any help would be great! |

Re: Screen in Gas Tank Removal
There is a specific tool sold by many Model-A parts vendors for removing it.

Re: Screen in Gas Tank Removal
Years 28 and 29 are screw in. Yours drops in using the tabs to hold it, 30 and 31.
Remember it is a flame arrester not really a screen. The suppliers have a replacement for the 30 and 31 cars. |

Re: Screen in Gas Tank Removal
You can make your own tool: cut a 1/8" thick piece in a circle with two tabs to match the indents, cut a 1/2" square hole in the middle to fit 1/2" drive breaker bar and unscrew it.

Re: Screen in Gas Tank Removal
Depending on the condition of the threads on your arrestor it may be pretty tight or even rusted. Might apply some kroil or liquid wrench. I would NOT use open flame heat for obvious reasons.

Re: Screen in Gas Tank Removal
Our late '31 with indent firewall reverted back to a screw in type. Repro's not available I believe for the late '31. Sometimes the top threaded portion is "welded" in by corrosion, and the tool with tangs may not get it out.

My late 31 indented firewall has a screw in screen also.

Re: Screen in Gas Tank Removal
Thanks Everyone for the help. Now I know what the function of the screen arrestor is.
I did have one more question right now. Any good tips on cleaning the gas tank. The outside looks good no rust coming threw. Not sure how long it has been sitting with no gas cap. I know back in the day used to take it to a radiator shop and have boiled out but those days are long gone in my area. Is there a product that ya''ll can recommend ? Thanks again. Bits and pieces putting this littlebaby back on the road.. |
