putting gasoline in your Model A
It seems that whenever I put gas in my car it's a fight with the nozzle to keep the spring loaded seal on the pump nozzle depressed so gas will flow.
I've thought about getting a filler neck out of a new car that would interface with the pump nozzle better, then I could use it more like a funnel to put the gas in. Anyone have other suggestions? |

I lean on one elbow holding the nozzle and lightly squeeze the trigger. Too fast and the shut off kicks in. I takes practice.
The other day I did this and the nozzle fitting started leaking. Gas over the hood etc. NO fun. You could try a snow funnel |

Incidentally, I believe the law against leaving the engine running while filling the tank dates from the Model A (and later Model T) days. |

Re: putting gasoline in your Model A
Not sure what you are referencing. Does West Coast have an interlock on the nozzles to seal the nozzle so gas vapors get recycled ?
All we have here is the fill lever in the handle. |

Re: putting gasoline in your Model A
If I make a fist over the Model A gas inlet, then collapse the spring loaded device on the pump nozzle against my fist, the gas seems to go in fine. That's why I was thinking about building something out of a newer gas filler neck; which would act like a funnel and go into the Model A gas inlet.
I suppose, pulling the spark arrestor might allow the gas to go in better; which I might try. The problem with that would filling the tank to the top, as the nozzle would down further into the tank and shutting off. Then trying to top it off would put back to the initial problem. |

Some guys use a piece of 2" PVC pipe for this purpose but the PVC insulates the nozzle from gounding to the car. Could get static electricity then BOOM... Last edited by Y-Blockhead; 10-29-2018 at 02:38 PM. Reason: Add verbiage |

Yes! At least in Washington, the nozzles have this spring loaded device to seal the nozzle to the tank.

That's the case in at least all the URBAN areas in the three western states. Other states may be the same. It may be the case in Wisconsin in the Milwaukee area, for example.

Re: putting gasoline in your Model A
Wow, Y-Blockhead, I didn't know there was something like this available.
Now I'll be spending over $30 for my 30/31 and another $30 for my 28/29 cars just to fill the tanks. I'll have to think about that a little. So I might go back to making my own. I suppose taking an old gas cap and welding a newer filler neck to it would accomplish the same thing. |

My Spark Arrester (or as I thought it was called a filler screen - learn something new every day) is sitting in the bottom of my fuel tank. It got pushed through once when filling the tank.

Bought the neck extension and never looked back. $30.00 buys a lot of convenience.

Re: putting gasoline in your Model A
I bought the neck extender, wish it was a few inches taller though. I may have to pull the spark arrester. A club member said he made a fuel neck extension out of PVC.

Re: putting gasoline in your Model A
PVC works for me. A friend gave me a "U" shape tool similar to a two tined cooking fork that will hold the Nozzle in the fill position no matter how it sits on the filler neck. I forget to use it most of the time as I grab the PVC fitting and just press the nozzle against it. No protection from a static spark, but 20 years and no problem. I think the static spark is about as apt to happen as a bird dropping a lighted ember on the neck while filling. May learn better tho.

It may not be a problem in your area but in Inland Southern California we get very low humidity. I have ocassionally experienced static sparks just touching the gas nozzle. Luckily, I've never actually experienced static sparks while filling the tank. David Serrano |

I fill my gas cans at the station and bring them home and use a funnel. I have never had a problem that way.

Katy,
You live in Canada and don't have a snow funnel? It is a big mouth funnel with 2 fine screens in the throat to catch the snow while you are gassing up out side. Water is separated from the gas. They were commercially made |

Re: putting gasoline in your Model A
I have a PVC fitting that a fellow club member told me about 13 years ago. Works absolutely great, keeps the nozzle off of the filling area. Have never, ever seen a spark, but I also don’t have that internal spark arrestor either.....but then, I have never heard of an actual issue with either....only fears.....
