Default 39 steering column cover plate

I just acquired a missing piece for my deluxe Tudor project. It is supposed to be a 78-700389 steering column cover plate and is 8" long and 1" wide. Can anyone post a picture of one installed? Does the e-brake cable go under it? From the 78 prefix 37-39 may be the same.

I don't believe 39's had them.
I stand corrected - According to Gary Mallast's 38/39 book they did have them.
None of the original 39's I have owned ever had them - they must have been discarded.
I'd better start learning at this late stage of my life to keep my mouth closed.
Maybe it was the RHD ones that didn't have them.
Hardly a weight saver.

Yes ,the '39 had them. Same p/n as the '37-'38 but the '39 had rounded end of the plate versus square ends on the earlier plate. Not sure of the cable routing.

That's what mine looks like and it has a raised section in the middle where it would allow something to pass under it.

Here's the best photo I have that depicts the proper routing of the brake cable.
Also, you can barely see (part of) the plate.

Thanks Kube, it seems this plate goes under the wood floorboard and is held in place by two floorboard screws.(?) the ebrake cable passes under the raised section on plate and goes under(?) the column seal. Did the 39 have another plate that goes around the pedals? Mark

The metal plate is placed atop the wood board.
And yes, the cable is routed below the column seal.
There is not other plate.

See attached photos the first one is from the July/Aug V8 Times magazine showing a 37 Ford Plate install. The second is my photo of a 38 - 39 steering column plate. The 38 -39 Ford steering column plate has rounded ends, Ford did not change part number.

Snoop 38 - 39 Ford 5 window coupes do not used the steering column plate.

Did the '37-'38 Club Coupe use the steering column plate?

Not on '39.

Kube I was using Fords Body Parts List booklet form number 7085 dated February 1939 and it shows pedal opening cover plate part # 78-700392 is used on the Tudor, fordor, convertible, 5 window coupe, sedan delivery, and station wagon. If there were changes later I do not know.

Parts books are not a good source for "correctness".
I have little doubt that plate would fit on a 39... it's just that Ford didn't install one.

Funny you should ask. I spent last evening rerouting the emergency brake cable on my 39 Fordor after I removed it to adjust the e-brake. I could not get the turnbuckle to adjust enough while in the car.

Mine is mostly original, unrestored, and the cable is on top of the trim piece, not under it as in Kube's photo. Mine also has the plate in the second photo on post #9. There seemed to be a lot of space around the steering column in mine.

I won't be over there to take a photo for a while, most likely. What a PITA job that was, lying on the floor routing the cable back in place. I don't want to do that again.
