Default RHD steering column removal

I am trying to remove the steering column on my 29 open cab pickup. As its right hand drive, it seems that the pitman shaft won't come out of the chassis unless I first remove the exhaust manifold. I hope I am wrong - can anyone tell me if there is an easier way?

Hi Mac,
No, it is not nessecary to remove the exhaust. However, I seem to recall, I removed the pitman arm as well as the soft top. 1, to clear the exhaust and 2, there is not enough head room for the columb to go up and out.
If I am mistaken, someone will pipe up with the correct answer.

As Floats says it can be done but it is a bit of a fiddle .Much easier to remove the manifold etc etc. This is my experience with a 28 rhd phaeton .

Thanks Guys,
Its amazing how these jobs just start growing. As well as having to remove the exhaust manifold, I have just noticed a leak where the steering column is supported under the petrol tank. What I thought was a small job is now turning into a big (and maybe expensive) one. Aaaaaaaargh!!!!

Mac,
I believe it is called “mission creep” or “ mission drift” or words to the effect.

Mac:

I think the way one little thing leads to another....and another....and another even bigger issue is all part of the joy of owning and working on our own Model A's. Nothing seems to be a little job. Especially when so many of the repop parts only "kind of" fit. I can only imagine how frustrating it is not only to have to have some of the parts special for the right-hand drive, but also having to have them shipped so far.

Cheers,

-Bill
