Got the new bumper clamp
Guys, thanks for all the input about the bolt I screwed up. Anyway I ended up ordering a new clamp before I expoxyed the bolt in because I didn't think it would hold with the JB WELD and I needed the car road ready this weekend. But I am going to try the spilt nut thing to repair the thread on the old clamp. I am going to try to post a couple of pics of the new clamp. You deside for your self, it does not look like the broken one. Also the nut size and thread is different that the end one. I don't know if mine is a original ??
The Catalog said. "This is a 3 piece die formed cadmium clamp with a polished stainless cover which wraps to the back of the clamp all around the edge. This is not the cheaper type with tabs. A perfect duplicate of the original. No other repro clamps come close to the quality of these. Used May 1930 till end. " |

Re: Got the new bumper clamp
The new clamp looks good. I just love the phrase from the catalog "made just like the original"?!? LOL

Re: Got the new bumper clamp
The new one is very similar to the original mid-'30 through '31 bumper clamps. I don't have great pics as these are taken from a 18 year old analog video when I was restoring them. I had to peel off the stainless skins, remove MANY dents, and reassemble.
Your old ones aren't much like any originals. I believe they are cast over a steel bolt. It wouldn't take much of a collision for them to break.

Re: Got the new bumper clamp
I have some clamps that look just like your old one. They came with a 30 Tudor I bought several years ago that was all apart and partly restored. The clamps I have definately are not originals and are poor reproductions that I think were made some time ago. The clamp you bought looks to be a very well done part. It looks like it will do the job.

Re: Got the new bumper clamp
I am in agreement with the posts so far. Your new piece is a very pretty reproduction and is a whole lot more faithful to what Henry and the boys used to hang the bumpers. And, as usual, Marco's restored pieces represent what we all wish we were doing ... if we had the skill, time, and patience.

Interesting question! I always thought the change from the '29 type was about a month before the change in the instrument panel (late June for the panel). I' can't be sure however. Doug Clayton's low mileage 155-D (24k miles) was built in mid May and I believe it has the early clamps so we are getting close. I don't have a better example as far as timing.
