Default irregular clicking sound

After installing a rebuilt engine everything worked fine except for this odd irregular clicking sound when driving. At first i thought it was something to do with the running gear, oiled the sqeaky front spring, greased everything still the clicking noise. Sometimes I could drive arond, no clicking, didn't matter if we where driving fast or slow. Once clicking started, turned off the engine and coasted sound disappeared!! OK sound from the engine. Took the alternator and water pump apart, all OK. Removed the starter, bingo the small return spring against the starter gear GONE. The small gear had been bouncing off the flywheel ring and the stop on the bendix!!!!
Oredered a new bendix starter gear. hope this works!!

Tiny tip: Get some extras of the special lock washers for the Bendix and keep a couple in your car.

Good for you! Did you think about getting a modern bendix? Doesn't come apart as bad as original.

Easier to install and a lot less worries, unless you "have" to be original.

I have mostly heard bad things about the modern ones, mainly that they jam a lot. Once you fix your starter it will last for another 20 years.

There are different modern Bendix drives available that have are different quality. I bought two from two different vendors to find one that I thought was a good one. So far I am very happy with the the one in my car. The ones that jam are different than the ones used in Model A's. They have a mechanism that locks the drive in the engaged position which causes them to jam if the engine does not start. But, like I said, these types are not used on Model A's.
