Default How do yo measure a Sealed Beam Headlight Bulb?

I realize this probably seems very elementary but how do I determine the bulb size? I have a Coupe in here that has one of those old sealed beam conversation kits that needs a bulb replaced. The one that came out of it is a 6 volt Wagner 2D1 bulb that measures 6.750” across. I am finding Wagner 6006 6v bulbs online that are advertised as 7” bulbs. Is this the same bulb, -or was there a 6.750 diameter bulb also??

TIA!!

That is the 7 inch bulb.It's like a 2X4.A 2X4 now is 3-1/2 X 1-1/2.The only real oddball sized lamps I've seen have been military,and they were spotlights,made odd sized so they wouldn't get used as headlight bulbs.Where I am Napa,Autozone,and Advanced all have them in stock.The quality on them has gotten really poor too.

Maybe they measure them differently than you and I do.?

Now I see that these are 12 VOLT

Keith, I didn’t figure my local parts stores would carry a 6v bulb. Maybe I should ask.

Is there a manufacturer's name and/or part # on the SB? Possibly European?

6006 is the standard 6V bulb. The H6024 is 12V halogen. Don't know where you would find 6V halogen, it that's what you have. Swap both headlights anyway, use 6006 for less grief.

I think you'll find the 2D1 is a designation for the configuration and size,kind of like a group 1 battery.There are a lot of batteries in the group 1 size configuration.Same thing with the headlights.Look at a 7 inch headlight in 12 volt,I think you'll see the 2D1 designation on it too.

6 volt halogen sealed beam lamps are available. I bought a pair of new ones off eBay.

I once had a vehicle (1990 Aerostar) w/halogen sealed beams, every few months one would burn out, either left or right side. I finally got fed up w/halogens and replaced them w/non-halogens sealed beams and no more problems w/burn-outs. The light was just as good w/the non-halogens as w/the halogens. Had that vehicle for 5 or 6 years after that.

2D1, 2C1, and 2B1 are all SAE type references. The following link explains them pretty well;
http://www.experts.com/content/artic...m-Filament.pdf

The type references are more recent than the basic designs of the sealed beam bulbs.

Oils on/in your fingers/hands will cause halogens to burn out prematurely ! Using latex gloves when installing and wiping the bulbs off with alcohol works.

yea i think all the sealed beam manufacturing equipment got sent to the 3rd world countries. Ive bought new sealed beam rectangles and either the bulb isnt in the correct spot of the reflector so i get a really bright spot in the middle on low beam, or its in the wrong spot so when you adjust for lows the highs way in the trees. meanwhile i was given a pair of unused bulbs that are prolly 30 years old that was sitting in a coworkers dads garage - absolutely beautiful beam pattern and perfect levels between high and low. old GE wagner bulbs.

you may have to buy the sealed beam to composite conversions - i think Hella makes them in the EU. But by the time you do all that your better off buying the correct shaped stock reflectors and revert back to stock lights.

As stated, those were sealed beam units, not bulbs.
