Default Reproduction rear spare tire bracket

I ordered a replacement rear spare tire bracket from one of the major parts suppliers. It fits just fine, but I wonder if it's strong enough, as it appears to be made out of aluminum or pot metal and only weighs maybe half as much as my broken original. Has anyone had trouble with the reproduction spare tire brackets breaking with your spare rolling down the road after you? I'm thinking that I should send this one back and get a good used rear spare tire bracket. Thanks in advance.

I would say an original would be best to be safe. How did yours break? Did the studs break off? Originals are pretty easy to find depending on the car model and what you are looking for.

The bracket was broken when I acquired the car. I will send this reproduction back and get an original. As you say, there are a lot of them out there, probably due to hot rodding the Model A. Thanks.

Tell us what kind of "A" you have and somebody has exactly what you need.

As said, originals are plentiful
A few are little more rare but "findable"

Oldblueoval,

I have found that here in So. Cal. the spare tire carriers are plentiful at Swap meets and on Craig's List but the spare tire brackets are harder to find. I have been looking for a couple of years but haven't found a spare tire bracket.

I was going to buy one of the reproduction Brackets but was skeptical about them being made of aluminum. I bought two of the original carriers but they are very heavy.

What type of aluminum? Some of that stuff is pretty damn tough.

I don't know what kind of aluminum it is, but the bracket is quite light weight to the point where I can't see it holding up the first big bump in the road that I hit. I don't want to see my spare following me down the road on its own.

Try a welding shop. A welder / fabricator can bring it back to original if you cannot find one.

California T....

You sorta lost me on "carrier"/ "bracket". What he has pictured is what I was referring to as bring rather plentiful. There are 16 on ebay right now as pictured. However, I am not totally sure they are for the correct model A. He would have to figure that out.

The Judging standards and restoration guidelines book lists the different parts numbers for the different spare tire brackets . I believe that the originals are made of cast steel and takes a whole lot of heat to weld . The aluminum reproductions that I have seen seem to be thick enough to handle the job. I would always prefer good used original parts because they are real model A .

The spare tire "carrier" is the one in the photo in post #9 where the spare tire is mounted. The spare tire "bracket" goes behind the sheet metal to support the spare tire "carrier".

It's an original "bracket" I can't find. My search will continue at the Big Three Swap Meet in San Diego in a couple of weeks.

There should be a number in the metal on the broken one that you have . If you can find the number on yours you could advertise the number that you want . The 30-31 brackets had a relief near the bottom to clear the rear lower panel molding . the 28-29 brakets wouldn't likely have the lower relief . Any of the sedan brackets with three holes should fit . the 1928 fordor brackets attached with 4 bolts and won't fit the tudor .
