The two holes in the inner cup should be placed horizontal, so they are at 3 and 9 o'clock.

Ford made two different versions of the universal housing/clamshells/sphere joint.

One version has the 6 bolts "staggered" around the perimeter of the housing. These go together only one (well, maybe 2) way. When assembled the holes in the sphere are at the 3 and 9 o'clock position. (i.e horizontal centerline)

The other version has the 6 bolts "evenly spaced" around the perimeter of the housing. These go together in any of 6 positions - but assembled originally with the clamshell splits at the horizontal centerline.

And like the unequal version, the sphere is assembled with the holes at the 3 and 9 position.

Service Bulletins describes the changes. And a caution not to mix up parts (although given the change this might be hard to do.)

Hope this helps.

Edit: Tom beat me by less than a minute.

I went looking for the inner cover in the shop and couldn't find one, so I found
this here on the Barn.
The 2 holes, one on each side,..would be at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock position,
as if you are viewing a clock....okay?
