21 stud to 24 stud V8
Question for the Ford flathead experts. What year did Ford change from the 21 stud to the 24 stud 221 V8 ? Also, were there both versions during one model year ? I'm asking this because I watched a video of 1938 Fords being built at the Ford Rouge, and they showed both 21 and 24 stud engines.

The video was correct. The 1938 year used both 21 and 24 stud engines.

Yep, 38 Fords were a mixture, 21 studs early and 24 studs late.

Yes, the 24 studder was used in the 1938-and-a-half model or thereabouts. 8^)

Re: 21 stud to 24 stud V8
Thanks a lot everybody for the info. Looks like everyone agrees on both being used in '38. All of the engines I saw on the video also had Stromberg 97's which is correct also (last year of the 97 on Fords). I didn't see any V8 60's in the video though. I think they built those in '37, '38 and '39.

Thank you 40 Deluxe. I should have said '40 too. I realized that after I posted it.
Didn't realize there were improvements for the V8 60 in '40. Sal |

Re: 21 stud to 24 stud V8
Yes, the V8 60 hp is like a turtle. Several varieties, but all versions are SLOW. Built for Europe due to fuel prices and marketed here in the States. Only one of Ford's mistakes.
Go BIG or Go Home. V8 85 hp and higher for me. I owned 2 V8 60s. One in a survivor 37 Coupe and one in a 40 Midwest pickup. Both ran and idled excellent. First upgrade you came to was when you pulled your hair out and made up some new words. The Model As and Model B engines would run circles around them. I drove them around the block and that was enough for me. My survivor 37 coupe only had 23,000 miles as of last year. -Cause nobody wanted to drive it much I guess. And the 40 pickup only had 42K. Find one because they are in cherry condition, then change the motor and deep 6 the 60. |

The Chandler Groves carb was introduced in 1938 and was used as well as was the 97.
