Transmission to Flywheel Housing Help!
Installed flywheel, clutch disc and pressure plate today and tried to mate them up with the trans bellhousing. The input shaft indexed fine into the disc, but I was unable to join the two halves. About 1/4" gap all around. Thinking that's the pressure plate fingers bearing up against the throwout bearing, but unsure and don't want to force anything. Do I attempt to thread the bolts in and use them to compress the two halves together, or should they join up without having to do that? My first A, and don't want to bugger anything up. Help much appreciated!

Re: Transmission to Flywheel Housing Help!
It sounds like you are not getting the input shaft into the pilot bearing. Did you line this up with the clutch disk when you bolted up the pressure plate? If that is lined up, it may just take a bit more wiggling to get it to go together. I would not recommend using longer bolts to put on any serious force. An old input shaft is the best alignment tool. Good Luck.

Re: Transmission to Flywheel Housing Help!
Didn’t use a old input shaft, but did use the plastic tool available from most of the parts vendors, so I’m thinking it’s lined up ok. I’ll give it another try today and see if I have any better luck. Thanks for taking time to reply. Bud

Re: Transmission to Flywheel Housing Help!
Is the clutch linkage disconnected or backed off far enough ?
The plastic pilot tools usually work good if they are inserted far enough. Filing the disk splines and using a slight bit of grease helps. |

Re: Transmission to Flywheel Housing Help!
You might want to take it apart again and make sure the clutch disk by itself will slip fully on the input shaft splines and that the pilot shaft seats fully into the pilot bearing (without the disc or PP installed).

Re: Transmission to Flywheel Housing Help!
Miked the pilot bearing and input shaft tip and found them to be a bit on the tight side. A few seconds polishing the tip with some crocus cloth did the trick and the two assemblies came together easily. Thank to all who weighed in on this one!
