Smile Steering Wheel Removal '29 Roadster

I am reading Les Andrew's Volume 1, page 1-317 regarding removal of steering wheel. Is it really that easy?

It can be a real hassle, depending on the body style. Some cars are near impossible to pull the horn rod with the steering column in place. What style is your car? If it is the roadster in your avatar, put the top down and you will be OK for that part. The actual removal of the steering wheel once the horn rod is out is not difficult. Undo the nut, plant your feet firmly of the floor, grab the spokes of the wheel near the center and PULL.

Search YouTube for:
Pulling off a stuck model A steering wheel.
It will come off. Be careful.

This is a later style steering wheel but this is how I got mine off and it was VERY stuck. I soaked the area with Kroil, loosened the nut and kept it loose on the shaft threads. I placed washers to protect the nut/shaft for when the puller was tightened. This set-up grabbed the wheel on top and bottom with even pressure. I tightened the puller and kept pressure on overnight. A slight tap on the puller shaft the next day allowed the wheel to pop off. No damage either. This might work for the earlier style steering wheels too.

Not always, sometimes they can be a real bear to get the wheel off the shaft, especially if the nut had been overtightened and they've been together for a long time.
