Default '40 Lincoln axle shaft

Anyone know if a Ford axle shaft can be used in a Lincoln rear end? 1940 Lincoln.

Check the part number in a Lincoln Chassis Parts books, if a Ford number should be OK. Paul J.

My Hollander Interchange shows 39-41 Ford, 39-40 Lincoln Zephyr, and 39-41 Mercury.

Thanks fellows, my Ford parts book lists 81A-4235 rear axle shaft overall length 32.85"-16 teeth in gear, 39-41 passenger car. Anyone have a Lincoln parts book they can look up the spec? Thanks, Ted

Sorry, there are Lincoln part numbers for the years 36, 37-39, 40 and 41-48. Not usable in Ford cars.

I know the prefix on the axle part numbers differ than Ford but they will interchange. I've got a pair of NOS Ford axles in my Zephyr and I've got the old axles here and can find no difference in them compared against a Ford axle.

I thought that might be the case. Thanks for confirming it Ken!

Ken, the 41-48 Lincoln axles are longer in length. Lincoln issued a new axle housing 16H4011 ...the shaft is about 1/2 inches longer. Also necessitated a change in the 41 fender skirts. The lower skirt edge was flattened to keep the wheel from rubbing the skirt.Did Ford change it's width also?

I think Ford changed to the longer axle in 42. Not sure about Lincoln. But I know they were the same thru 40.
