Default water pump leaking to oil pan?

As I was wrapping things up in the shop tonight, I decided to take a look at a 37 engine I have that was leaking water into the oil pan. I lifted up the engine far enough to drop the pan. I plugged the radiator inlets and filled each side of the engine with some fairly warm water.

I found that one soft plug has a little hole in the center of it. But I also have a drip at the front of the engine, somewhere above the crankshaft gear. It is on the drivers side and the drip just clears the crankshaft gear. I plan to take a closer look tomorrow but I seem to remember a thread where someone was getting water in the oil pan from a bad water pump.

Does this ring a bell with anyone or has anyone had the same problem?

In the case of block mounted waterpumps, prior to the 8BA-BRT, if the gasket fails it is possible for coolant to enter the oil.

Thanks JWL!
I hope that's it. I suspected the freeze plugs and was surprised by this other leak.

I hadn't updated this since I asked the question. I discovered something more interesting. What kind of smuck would replace 3 of the 4 pan rail plugs and leave just the clotted sand in the 4th?

Be as discriptive as you like.

SLANT; Know your block, JWL nailed it, part way, look at the front of the block, water pumps off, the large hole for the pump implerar, about 2.5 inch dia. hole. Look for a small hole next to the timing gear cover. The water pump will cover this hole, it is oil pick-up to lube the water pump. If your gasket is bad or misplased, it can leak water in the oil.... its a reach, but it can happen, it picks up oil splash from the timming gear. .... OLD....BILL

Thanks Bill for the information,

I definitely have a leak behind the water pump but also at the pan rail plug that was only capped up with crud. The other 3 plugs are new. I have to wonder what was up where that one was missed duing some work that was done at some point in the recent past.
