Fuel pump arm removal

Hello all. On the 293-312 dual action fuel pump The little pin that holds the arm in. There are two little ball bearings on each side of that pin on the pump housing holding the pin in.

Question. How does one remove those little balls to drive the pin out?

What year pump do you have (what model year car)? The pin is tubular?

Do you have the SHOP MANUAL for the car?

Thanks for responding. '55-'58 dual action pump is the listing. No, no factory service manual. I am using this pump for a 'custom' application.

In your fist exploded view up there, that part # 9418. On both sides of the pump housing,,,,, I'm guessing, on each side of the arm pin # 9378, looks like a ball bearing seated into the pump housing.

I have gently tapped with a punch and hammer, either side and nothing moves.

That little 'ball' has to come out first to access the pin. I can not figure out how to remove either one of those little retainer balls.

I have GOOGLED and You Tubed in every wording possible, disassembly, assembly, rebuild, etc, spent hours looking at every video on the subject. Only ONE video showed a pump with those little ball bearings, but did not cover how to remove them!

Hate to destroy a good pump housing to find out what holds those little balls in place! Somebody on here has tackled the removable.

Those little balls are swedged into place to seal the pump from letting crank case fumes and oil out.

Are you sure the pump is from a FORD application? The first ILL I showed is how the DBL ACTION pump is (was) assembled. It should be a pin held in with a retainer on the left side of the pin as you look at it.

The other ILL is a SGL action where instead of balls as you describe, they use a small expansion cup(s) ...

EDIT -

INCORRECT TERM - CORE PLUG not EXPANSION CUP!

... on either side of the pin (tube).

Yes, sounds about right. Now, how does one 'unswedged' those little balls?

I have no idea without seeing it. Sounds like a re-builders trick as service parts are not generally available. Can you post a close-up photo?

I don't have any idea as I have never seen anything like that. Did the seller describe the pump as rebuilt? I would ask them and/or post this @ y-blocksforever.com.

No! Brand splinter new! No re-man, or re-built. ALL new, with 'ethanol compatable' plunger/diaphragm rubbers.

Since no one knows how/trick to remove those little, arm retainer balls, and I don't want to 'experiment', chance screwing up a perfectly good fuel pump. I went a different direction.

You have to understand that what you have is an off-shore copy (close but no cigar) and no service parts/service info is available (most likely).

These so-called EARLY FORD VENDORS should have the honesty/decency to mention that the part is not an exact copy or possibly NOS.

Fit, function and mileage might vary.

There is a recent article in the Early Bird magazine addressing the issue of an entire batch of (off-shore manufactured) Airtex brand #4406 double action fuel pumps being defective right out of the box.

I'll attach an image of the article in this space in a few minutes, have to make it fit into this space first.

THANX!, and it is related. These stores are selling junk and not informing the customer. If one wants junk it is a lot cheaper from a box store or EvilBay.

Same for IGN, CARB and DIST. And people keep buying it.

I've attached 3 overlapping images of the article. Tried to keep them large enough so you could read the text.

It boils down to... all the Airtex 4406 pumps assembled with Phillips head screws are defective.
Some other brand names of new/replacement fuel pumps are failing as well.
The Airtex pumps with flat-head or hex-head screws apparently(?) don't have the same problem.
