8ba & oil pans
Question; I have an 8ba that I am building for a model A' and would
prefer to use a rear sump oil pan. Will an earlier 59ab oil pan work if I remove the stamped flywheel shroud section from the rear portion of this style oil pan? Second but lesser question, did any of the pre 8ba oil pans ever have a windage tray, and if so what years would I look for that would work in this pan with an 8ba motor. Thanks, Steve |

Hey Steve .....Wow, I've never heard anyone contemplate cutting the rear off of a 59A type oil pan. There is just too much going-on at that rear part of the engine that just would NOT work out too well. The very first problem that I see with that plan would be figuring-out where you would glue a starter onto the engine. But not to fret, as there are at least a couple of very useful, rear-sump oil pans made to fit an 8BA-type block. The first that comes to mind is this plentiful specimen that came on pick-up engines. There are SOME 1935 thru 1940 cars that end-up with some mild interference between drag link and front of pan in a hard turn, The simple modification you see at the front of the sump tends to take care of that situation, which I believe is caused by mounting the front of engine too low in the chassis. And as is true with ALL 8BA type engines, you MUST use the STARTER PLATE that matches the oil pan chosen. The modified pick-up pan shown below! The UN-MODIFIED stock version below! Then you have the '49 and later Mercury oil pan. These are beginning to get somewhat hard to find. And even harder to find is the matching sheet metal pieces that fit the oil pump pick-up to the BAFFLE. I have seen the oil pump baffle & pick-up pieces going around the $400 mark (and some lesser), in addition to the Merc pan itself, but it is a neat package. Pics seen below. This is the really rare & expensive piece of the deal for the Mercury. Back in the day, most of these got tossed out in the weeds. Below is the baffle and hole that the piece above fits into. And next, the pick-up sitting in the hole as it does when bolted to pump. And THE Merc pan itself. . |

Re: 8ba & oil pans
I'll just admit it up front now, that when ya don't know something - ya just don't know something.... and I don't know much about the V8s, but I'm trying to learn !
I do know a lot about the A' & B' engines, and have run many OHV set ups over the nearly 60 years I've been playing with the cars, but this is new to me. My goal is to rebuild and install an 8ba engine in the A' coupe I have. I would like to run a rear sump oil pan for looks and convenience of that particular set up. The 8ba motor I bought as a starting point had no oil pan, pump or pick up, but did turn out to be a great core as it had no cracks and was still a stock bore, although completely worn out. So... school is always in session and I'm sure there are plenty of guys out there that can educate me on the finer points of skinned knuckles and swear words - deleted ! Thanks for the help and pictures. |

Are you planning to run a '39-type 3-speed, or what? DD |

Re: 8ba & oil pans
I currently have a 39 style and also a T-5 for the
4 banger OHV, but the 34 could use a new trans. Is that one you have rebuilt? |

No, that's just a picture I had. Good to hear that you have a place in your heart for T5s. That Model "A" could be a blast with a T5 with the right ratios inside. Perfect trans for a flatty in a car that light. What did you think about those oil pan choices? DD . |

Re: 8ba & oil pans
It eventually gets hooked to a Ki-wi quick change that I bought before they stopped producing. Even funnier is that I bought a few dozen change gear sets from a guy that charged me for rhe cost of the scrap weight - many many matched sets for the A' rear end

Re: 8ba & oil pans
I have a 52-53 Ford/Mercury oil pan. It's what I call a middle sump. It's for sale as I have sold my flathead powered car. It does have a small leak in the sump that needs to be welded.. Dipstick tube goes with it.

Re: 8ba & oil pans
Hi Paul; thanks for the offer, but since I don't need this thing yesterday I'll keep
looking a while longer - a rear sump, it's really what I had wanted all along. |
