Re: Red Liquid for the Hydrostatic Gas Gauge
Hey, I live about an hour and a half south of Seattle. IF you were to stop by my place I have a bottle of Ford gauge liquid that is still as red as the day it was made, and would put some in your gauge and you would need to be careful transporting it back home but you would have the correct fluid which would not go clear after about a year like the repro stuff. It is against the law to ship this stuff so the only way I could help you would to be for you to come to me. If you plan to go to the US when this Covid slows down PM me if you want the real McCoy.
I just posted pictures in my "Misc" album of the fluid and bottle. Last edited by deuce_roadster; 12-12-2020 at 12:35 AM. |

Re: Red Liquid for the Hydrostatic Gas Gauge
Rusty, You don't mention the tank unit. You should take it out and make sure it is cleaned completely, make sure all tubes and holes are clear. This tank unit also is the vent to your fuel system . I have restored lots of these and the "cups" on them are very thin brass and usually have little cracks in them you should solder up.
I usually clean what I can with Brakecleen or some strong solvent, then glass bead them with low pressure, flush with lacquer thinner then fix with solder any problems you find. When everything is as it should the gauges work fine. Since it works on air pressure, after sitting for days it may go back to zero until you move the car around and the gas sloshes around in the tank, then the fluid moves back up to the correct level. |

Re: Red Liquid for the Hydrostatic Gas Gauge
As Dale mentioned, the fluid is HIGHLY corrosive. I have had a couple of NOS 32 and 34 gages in their boxes that are junk. Probably from left over fluid from calibration. Boxes were toast too. When in the gauge and in very little contact with oxygen, the fluid seems to leave the gauges alone.

Re: Red Liquid for the Hydrostatic Gas Gauge
The hydrostatic line within my '34 Pickup was kinked near the fuel gauge and obstructed. A friend added a little Sta-Bil to the gauge, and since then I have always had a half tank of gasoline. The red color is still good after 10 years.

Re: Red Liquid for the Hydrostatic Gas Gauge
Interesting. I know the red dye they put in diesel fuel to mark it as 'off road' is extremely hard to get out of the system if you use in a truck tank . Wonder what that stuff is ?
