I think I remember Ol’Ron mentioning a while ago theJeep Grand Cherokee dana/spicer 44a with 3.73 was a good inexpensive choice to convert ‘34-‘40 to, Anyone know what yrs Grand Cherokees work?

No, But 3:73 seems a little low unless your using a T 5. I’m putting a 9” Ford in my 35 with a 3:00 ratio. 1940 transmission with open drive conversion.

I've got a 03 GC, and it does NOT have a 44. I wish it did. And, whatever rear I have, is 3.73. I live in the mountains, and 3.73 (with OD) works good for me.
Seems to me that an Exploder rear would also be a good choice.

The 44a has disk brakes and posi from 96 through 06?? not sure if they were used after that date. THey come with 5 on 4.5 bolt pattern, except for 99 thru 02 when they switched to 5 on 5 bolt pattern. Weight of axle is aproc the same as the 8" Ford. Biggest advantage of the 44a is price and availability. abetter option would be the Dana 35 from the GC, it's substantially lighter than the $$ 0r the 8". For a passenger car the weight of the rear axle controls ride quality and you;ll never break it with a flathead. I use light springs and mid 80" camaro chevelle 70/30 shocks

Ol' Ron, what GC's have the Dana 35? Sounds like no disc brake w the 35 Dana? More or less cost? Why a better choice than the 44a?

Reread Ron's post, it is lighter weight and Ron explains why that is desirable.

I'm gonna make a guess... My 03 GC is a 6 cyl, and does NOT have a D44. Perhaps it's V8 GC's that have the Dana 44 ?? Or maybe it's MODEL related. Mine is a Laredo.
And, to Anthony, above, My GC DOES have disc brakes on the rear. And, it's 4x4, if that makes any difference. (There is such a thing as 2wd, although VERY rarely seen around my parts.)
