Fan belt issue
I am putting on a new fan belt on my A but having real difficulty because the space between the crank pulley and the spring shackles is too narrow. Any suggestions?...thanks

Re: Fan belt issue
Jack the engine up just a little. Put your jack under the front of the pan. Protect the pan with a block of wood. You don't have to raise it much, just enough to be able to get the belt to slip on the pulley.

Carl, I am thinking there is more to it if the pulley is that close to the spring shackles. I wonder if he is speaking of something other than shackles, maybe the engine mount or the spring clamp (U-bolts)?? |

Re: Fan belt issue
Not enough room between pulley and spring U-bolts? I turn the belt sideways using hand crank turn engine. It will leave some marks on the belt, on an old belt it may cut it into! This is quicker than jacking up the motor. One more belt installing trick is too put the belt on the smaller pulley and start it on the larger pulley, then turn until the belt pops on!

Some of the reproduction spring sets do not hold the engine high enough and this problem is encountered. Check that you have an original version of the front motor mount spring set. Good Day! |

Re: Fan belt issue
Put the belt on the pulley before you put the pivot bolt on.

You most likely are trying to get belt past the u-bolts/plate the holds spring to front cross member. As said, loosen things (mounts) and gently raise front of engine...a small amount to remove belt. I have same problem with my '30 A. Now it is worse, after my installation of a harmonic balancer. Last edited by hardtimes; 07-25-2017 at 10:42 PM. Reason: .............. |
