Nu Rex Points

Had a second points failure although the plate is identical it is not stamped Nu Rex.The points are the same but in cadmium plate not gold .I did a post mortem and found it was the moving point not the fixed one which surprised me.The second failure was partial continuity .Big spark when flashing with screwdriver but poor spark when opening points.Vendors here want equiv 19 bucks for new points before postage.I visited my Napa similar and found closest was 22640 which is for Volvo and others .The register pin is in the same place so filed the holes to suit and now runs fine .What is the Ford part number for the Nu Rex points please .

Here is in the UK, model A vendors here charge just over double what a USA vendor would charge,import duties, sales taxes,profit etc etc. The Volvo points cost 7 dollars equiv. here.It may be the Ford points were used in UK/Europe too so if I get the part number it could be way cheaper .

Usually those "modern" point conversions use 60s ford V8 points

If your asking about "Modern Points, Kurt is correct. The modern points are for Ford V-8 from 1957 thru the 70's. STANDARD MOTOR PRODUCTS part #FD8183V or equivalent.

If your 'post mortem' revealed one point side disintegrating faster than the other that shows you have an imbalance between the ignition coil inductance and condenser capacitance. Your capacitor is tired, maybe also electrically 'leaky.' Time for a new capacitor.

A and L Inc. - Al Lepore s company has a high quality condensor that they selll as a "burnout proof" condensor.

It eliminated my ignition problems. At same time I installed a ground wire from firewall directly to the distrbutor.

Apparently the ground from dist to head and then to frame was not very good.


I think that Berts sells the capacitors also.

Both top plates were nearly new(with fitted condenser) very low miles . Visually the moving point looks fine a dull grey finish as usual,no degradation. I suspect the bond between the point and arm is the culprit . I will see how the Volvo points hold up.

Not sure how grounding the distributor to the body helps since the battery is grounded to the frame but if it works for you that is all that counts...

Hi John! I posted last week that Ford Motor Company is no longer offering points for the late 50s through early 70s. I stopped by our local Ford dealership last week and they gave me the news. They told me aftermarket is all that is available. If by chance you still have them in the UK stock up. Buy low sell high LOL

The points is what completes the ground side of the coil circuit. If the head distributor hole is rusty or the distributor lower housing has paint or rust, then it may not make a good ground.

Another good reason for a ground strap from bellhousing/transmission bolt to frame.

Also many heads have paint on them so that head nuts do not make a good electrical contact to the studs.

My car has had an extra ground from frame to block since the early 60's.

True, Maybe I didn't explain myself clearly, my point was I don't think the body is the best place for a ground, best to use frame.

Found it in my 1979 Chiltons Flat rate and Parts Manual for ya John, B8Q-12171A
