Shell doesn't fit crank
I have an after market radiator shell, but when fitted to an original '28/29 radiator, the crank hole will not line up to allow hand cranking engine; the hole in the shell is about 3/4" too high.

Re: Shell doesn't fit crank
Never yet heard of an aftermarket rad shell being that far off. Does the crank hole in the shell line up with the crank bearing on top of your front crossmember? A common problem is an engine with collapsed front engine mounts that won't line up with the crossmember crank bearing.

Mike is probably right. A picture would help a lot.

Re: Shell doesn't fit crank
Maybe the top of the shell around the radiator neck is not pushed down enough.

Re: Shell doesn't fit crank
Check for an aftermarket front motor mount. There some out there that will raise the engine out of range for the crank. A stock front mount will always line up.

Re: Shell doesn't fit crank
It could be a poor fitting shell being it is aftermarket or the radiator was recored and the core is 3/4 to long,if you have the old shell try it for fit.

Re: Shell doesn't fit crank
This brings up a point that I have seen happen more than once. Sometimes parts are un- usable for what ever reason. Might only be that one part, might be several hundred parts got produced before someone caught the mistake. They should go in the scrap but sometimes they go on down the line and get shipped to a dealer. Every time a tech needs that part, it goes out into the shop and comes back defective. 35 years later it is obsolete and is now NOS, new old stock, And " that's the rest of the story" as Paul Harvey used to say. If it was a coin or a postage stamp, it would be worth thousands.

Re: Shell doesn't fit crank
Happened to me too. 28/29 nicke shell has a bad fit. Crankwhole doesn't match and the quail will not sit, not enough thread ! So I filed the mounting wholes in the shell to get a match. Now it will work !

Re: Shell doesn't fit crank
1. There are basically 3 front crossmembers....it sets the radiator height...
2. Are there "pads" between the radiator and the crossmember,..the thickness of new brake shoe material, which Ford used in that spot.. Photos would help like Rusty said... |
