Which Stromberg Carb was used on a 1934 ford v8?

The Stromberg 48 Carburetors were the original-equipment carburetors for the 1934 Ford Flathead V-8s and the 1935. The 97s were offered on the 85hp V-8s from 1936 to early 1938.

I heard that the Stromberg 48 carb in 1935 actually had a 48 stamped into its case. But the Stromberg carb 48 in 1934 had NO 48 stamped on its case.

The Stromberg 48 carburetor on my 34 Roadster has no 48 stamped on the case.

A lot of what appear to be model 48's are actually model 40 carbs.
The "40" designation came from the Ford part number prefix for 1934 automobiles. The 40's are very similar to 48's with the exception of the upper idle channel circuits. Outwardly, it's near impossible to tell the difference.

Frank and I have been discussing this issue. There is a Stromberg model 40 which is
basically on the outside like a 48 only without the 48 stamped on the RH rear corner
of the air horn and bowl OR in raised letters on the drivers side air horn and
bowl. Here is what you don't see.......the model 40 has a slightly different idle circuit
than the 48. This circuit is not a big deal but that is what really separates the model
40 from the 48. Model 40 is correct for '34. Something else to consider........40 is the
prefix for everything strictly '33 and '34............48 is the prefix for everything strictly
'35. In my stash I probably have 25 model 48 bowls with NO stamped or raised 48
showing.
Like lots of Henry's stuff......a conundrum !

So, If I have a stromberg 48 with no stamping designating 48 then it is most likely a Stromberg 40?

I agree Charlie. Here are some some Stromberg casting codes I have noted from my tear downs.

Model 40. Bowl = P-19401 , Air horn = P-19402

Model 48, Bowl = P-20671 , Air horn = P-20692

These different #s from Model 97s

Frank.....The deciding issue between the 40 and 48 ,to be painfully detailed, is the idle circuit. If you remove the air horn from your carb and you observe air channels leading
up to the idle tubes you have a 48. If you observe no air channels you have a 40.
No model 40 had model numbers however model 48's might have raised #48s on the
left side or stamped 48's on the right side or no #'s at all.

Externally only a couple guys can tell the difference between a 40 and 48

Unlike the 48, doesn't the 40 not have the S/W lever on the side?

The 40 and 48 do not have the summer/winter positions on the throttle shaft for the accelerator pump rod. The model 97 has this feature which was used in 1936. Regards, Kevin.
