Default 4 Cylinder Chevy Main Bearing Rebuild

Just got done with the mains this week. The earliest Chevy I have done, was a 1914. I think they started in 1912.

I don't know about the 1912, and 1913, but the bearings are all a like from 1914, to the last year, 1928.

Here are some pictures.

Thanks,

Herm.

Herm: Beautiful work as we expect from you. However, questions, just for my information and ignorance. Is there any pressure oil on the Chevy? Is there any substantial difference on the cap grooves from the Ford grooves? The pics seem to show a different set of grooves for the Chevs. In your opinion was the Chevy set up and grooves better than the Ford? Just curious. P

Question for you Herm. How do you know if and how to make a groove and where does it go? Are there books that say make a certain type of groove here at this depth and width or is it basic common sense?

Mike

Herm,

Thanks again for the photos of the Chevy(1920) that you sent me of the rear main. To bad the Babbitt guy didn't figure it out first go around...
Third time was the charm!

Thanks Herm, Are the 3 grooves in the rear main factory or something you added to prevent leaks?

Mr. P.C., The 4 Cylinder Chevys had an all splash, and rod dipper system.

Yes, the Chevy oil grooves are way different then the Model T. The Model A is one of the best grooving systems there for a splash system, and I groove all Model T's like that.

The Chevy grooving seams to work all right, but I would add a oil groove in the front cap from oil well, to oil well like the Model A, as that is where the load is, but I put them in like the originals.

Mr. 1930., Some bearings have a very elabret oil grooves, and some have none. All depends on how the oil system was designed, splash or pressure.

I always put the same kind of oil grooves in, and you cant go wrong.

Just the Model T I put Model A grooving in.

Thanks,

Herm.

Your Welcome, Mr. D. J.

Mr. Jim, yes, they are factory.

I will list some pictures, if I can fond some.

Herm.

Just when you think that the work cannot become any better.you have taken a nice job to a superb level. Wished you would have done my 1921 Chevy back in the day. I payed way to much , got a sorry job that only lasted about 2000 very easy applied miles, but I did trade it for a 63 split window and thought that I payed to much for. . I valued mine then at 1800 and he had the vette at 2100. And we split the difference at 150 . Very beautiful work you sir are a consummate professional . Godspeed and keep those old cars on the road

Hey Herm,
Thanks for sharing your very professionally done product !

BTW..I've got a set of CHEV mains. They are originals and are grooved at your first picture shows. They are made of BRONZE (?) and heavy duty, for sure...very thick.

Back in the mid/late 60', I have EGGE redo my chev block and they did a wonderful job. Trivia: then they stopped doing Babbitt work, and are now back into that again.

I had a '28, the last yr of the 4-cyl. The center main was a different size than the front and rear. Don't know which years that applied to but seems to me it would make line boring more of a challenge

Ya, Mr. Tbird, all the 4 Cylinders had the stepped crank.

Three different sizes to cut.

They did this well into the 50's.

The set of inserts you have Mr. Hardtimes are I think for a 1929 to 1931 Chevy.

Thank's

Herm.
