Default Head Gasket

This could be similar to what oil to use question!
What is the opinion of putting a Best Head Gasket or a silicone head gasket (has the silicone around each head bolt) for a standard original type head? Also, any sealers to either?

I would use the Best graphite head gasket and apply the copper spray as a sealer.

Opinions vary on what gasket should be used.

Here is another string on the subject.

Best with copper coat. I have installed over 300 of them. Do not use the silicone one

I have only had 1failed gasket in 23 years. It was the silicone type. Never again. Always a copper type for me.

When installed properly any of the non silicone gaskets will work great.

I like copper and silver paint. Best makes both copper and graphite (or something), with the same part number, 509. Copper is easier to clean off when changing gaskets, graphite is a beast.

We used decal remover to clean off the stuck parts of the Graphite gasket, Permatex and others make it, spray it on,-- grab a beer -- or 2, then scrap of the slimy stuff and your done in minutes, most modern cars use the graphite gaskets.

I have no recommendation! But I did put up a story under, tell a Model A related story, about reusing a head gasket. No one today would do it! We love these old cars too much. My dad, a mechanic of the 20's thru retirement in 1965 did some interesting things on his model A.

I've reused the copper head gaskets on my own Model A's. As long as the same head goes back on the same block, and the gasket looks OK, then I clean it and spray a couple coats of Copper Coat on the gasket, and bolt it together. Torque a few times as required and keep check on my antifreeze. I never had a problem doing this, but would not do it on a customer's car without their OK first. It's a gamble, but it also saves me the cost of a new head gasket, which is about $25.

Good to know! my dad cleaned it and put some silver looking stuff on it, got it tacky and I think put axle grease on the head and block and put it all together! Gotta remember this....."Copper coat!" $25 bucks is $25 bucks!!!

I have talked to people who rebuilds these motors full time and was told that if you use the silicone gasket you still have to apply a sealant to the gasket. The guy that rebuilds motors for Synder's recommends the Copper gasket. So that is what I will be using.

Re-torque after at least three hot cold cycles. The wrench and socket must be good ones.
