Default early ford u-joints

I purchased and installed one of those "Champ items" driveshaft retaining pins and u-joint springs on my 39 Ford car. You see them on ebay from time to time. Anyway, I lost the directions and upon reviweing a set recently listed on ebay, it notes "for short ujoint leave the spring as is; for long ujoint cut spring in half". This is touted as a spring to takeup slack in the torque tube if the drivehsaft pin should shear and the spring locates near the speedo drive gear area.

What is the difference between an short and long ujoint?

Is the v8-60 ujoint (74-7090) a different length than the normal B-7090 used forever?

I can see that if the spring is too compressed it places undue stress on the front bearing and seal in the speedo area of the torque tube.

Any experience with this setup?
