Re: Generator Brushes and Adjustment and How It Works
Not being a mechanic, I really appreciate the knowledge and wisdom that I find on this site. Thank you Tom for solving what has been a mystery to me regarding the generator.

Re: Generator Brushes and Adjustment and How It Works
Thanks, Tom, but - a question: my gen is putting out about 8-10a when running 25-30 mph. I do no night driving and no distance driving yet. Only short hops of a couple miles every couple of days. Should I adjust the brush back up a little or is the 8-10a okay?

I don't like to start an engine unless it's going to run at least 30 minutes in the summer and even longer in the winter. Back in the 70's I stuck two antique car engine by only running them for about 10 to 15 minutes, then letting them set for 6 months. |

Re: Generator Brushes and Adjustment and How It Works
Thanks again for the advice. I don't let the car sit for long periods - even in winter here in NE Ohio we still have some good days when I can get out. Seems like I read somewhere that keeping them running can prevent some problems so I try to do that as much as I can.

Re: Generator Brushes and Adjustment and How It Works
SHOCKED!!! Saw the first set of pictures and was just plain shocked after having just open the access cover on my generator looking for a charging problem... I had to go back and read the entire post to see that the picture is from a museum so I don't feel so bad now.
Mine is soooo not clean like the pictures. I will not bog this post down with my situation; but it is a mess for a very little experienced Model A maintainer. (Me) Pretty sure I will reread this ten more times; Thanks for sharing the knowledge!! |

Re: Generator Brushes and Adjustment and How It Works
It appears in your picture that the wire going to the brush is broken off in the first picture while the second shows TWO wires broken off.
