Default restoring a 1935 swivel ashtray

I have a sandblasted '35 swivel ashtray that goes in waterfall of a '35 dash. Has anybody disassembled one of these to re-paint it? Any tricks? I also read in another thread that the ashtray when it is swiveled to the positing that the receptacle part is facing the interior can be pulled out for cleaning. I don't see mechanically how this can happen. Can anyone enlighten me? Thanks.

Yes; you are correct; when the ashtray is swivelled around and faces the interior, it simply pulls straight off. Then, when it's off, you'll observe the centre 'pin' that it clips onto. This is in fact like a tubular rivet; the bottom part is swaged over. Tip the housing upside down and you'll see what I mean. Carefully drill through this roll over, and you can remove the pin and V8 faceplate. Make a new pin prior to reassembling your restored ashtray

I put one in my 36 in place of the radio. The ash receptacle just pulls away from the central pivot post. It has some little protrusions that grab either side of the pivot post. The face and the body are riveted together. I drilled out the staked rivet part and sent the body and the face off to the chrome plater and upon return, had my son drill and tap either end of the post on his micro lathe and reassembled it with some appropriately tiny screws.
I'll post you some pix tomorrow

See attached. I swivel it open and put a couple of fingers in the recepticle and pull.
