Default Hot Patches

Does anyone still make hot patches? I still have my old clamp but can't seem to locate the patches.

For some reason the name Tech-2-Way is stuck in the dark recesses of my mind.

Patching an innertube just ain't as much fun if you can't set it on fire.

These were made by Victor or Camel. According to a post over on the AACA site, our wonderful EPA folks has banned the sale of these in the US. Apparently they are still available in other countries, but not in the US.

i scuff the rubber really good, smear on a good quality rubber cement to both sides, set fire to it for about 2 secs, blow it out, apply patch, and clamp. Never had the luxury of any ready-made hot patches.

As I recall using them 50 years ago, they are phosphorus and burn very hot. The problem was with them being unsafe. You can't put it out with water. The burns are quite severe.

If anybody has a black market hot patch connection I'll agree to leave the money in a brown paper bag next to a park bench.

I'm coveting my remaining stock (Victor).

Still the best patches, in my humble opinion.

I also have a Shaler vulcanizing clamp from the Teens, which is a heavy cast-iron affair, with the clamp top forming a shallow fuel pan, with lots of stout cast-iron pins sticking-up. You clean and prep the injury, cut-out your sheet of vulcanizing rubber, apply the clamp, fill the "porcupine" fuel pan with gasoline, then light, and wait for it to burn-out.

If I can find some "vulcanizing rubber", I'm still in business...

When I was a kid (1970's), you could still buy vulcanizing patches in different shapes: round, diamond, long oval...

Yes, we can still poison the environment with the mercury from CFL light bulbs, and heavy-metals from LEDs, but at least we won't be poisoning / burning ourselves on those nefarious "chemical patches" any more... sheesh.

I'll contribute to the brown paper bag fund for a cut of those black-market hot patches...

I still have a stach of hot patches and clamp. I think they're still good. Last time I used one was probibly 30 years ago. It keeps mosquitos away. 2 ways are good for modern tires. hot patches are for tubes on old cars. Does anybody remember those tire boots? that patch of rubber you glued in the tire when there was a large gash in the tire, before you put the tube back in. They thumped, but you got some extra miles on them old tires.

Fleet Farm sold them until about 8 years ago. I also have the clamps and needed the patches. I found some on ebay. They are the best patches and I did a lot of them when I worked at my uncles service station in 8th grade, then later when I worked at other service stations after high school.

I bought a box of military hot patches on ebay about 5 years ago, that are sealed in wax.

I've never had one leak.

I've also had good luck with the TECH 2 WAY patches by cleaning the surface well, scuff it, apply a thin coat of cement, let it dry, then remove the plastic protection from the patch and press it to the hole. Then roll it on with the rattler. That's what my boss called the tool with the narrow knurled edge.

I don't know if they were the best or not but they sure were the most fun!
