Lawsons 97's ( LC ) + vintage kits
I rec'd LC's 97 and did the repair...minor issue. LC mentioned he had some
old carb kits and could we do a trade.....sure I said. Does anyone remember P&D, Jiffy & Sorensen kits esp for Strombergs. Power valves, correct return springs, the tiny kicker spring, 6-32 t'plate screws on and on. PLUS the delightful packaging..3x5x1 cardboard with superb graphics....as good as finding my barn find '32. Digging deeper some small card board tubes with inlet needles and seats....old dried tags with Ford pt #'s. I'm an old goof but it's part of what keeps me going. We made an 'it's all good ' deal. May be good to look for the source of the goo. Fuel pump or flex line to the pump.

That is in progress as we speak. Cleaning out fuel line from tank to carb. No telling what I'll find. Replacing all rubber connectors on fuel line, including flex line and new fuel pump. It ought to then run like it should.

Re: Lawsons 97's ( LC ) + vintage kits
Charlie, if you like old carb kits, I have a pile of kits. While its mostly gaskets and seems to fit everything and yet probably nothing as I'm sure they have shrunk up.

Re: Lawsons 97's ( LC ) + vintage kits
I recently had a 97 flood out. There was a small glob of rubbery stuck on the end of the needle valve allowing fuel to pour into the bowl. I use a mechanical pump without the site bowl. It has a very fine screen and there was no evidence of any debris there. I use a rubber fuel line which is 10 years old so maybe minor particles built up on the needle valve. Switching to a copper line would be a better way to go...... should of.....

If I attempt a swap copper will be a chore, but steal would be much more difficult to fish it around and make the bends. Why not copper it was OEM.?

As JSeery mentions, the originals WERE copper-coated STEEL. A great alternative today, for fuel OR for brake tubing is Authentic "CUNIFER" brand tubing. This stuff is used for OEM Volvo brake lines, and they are sticklers for safety. It bends easily, and double flares beautifully as seen in the pictures below. Make sure what you're getting is actually "CUNIFER" brand, as some imitations have a thinner wall-thickness. A bunch of good info in the "FEDHILL" web site link BELOW. https://store.fedhillusa.com/ |

Check at some of the parts stores there is some very flexible steel. They are often made up in short lengths.

Isn't it funny (Both funny strange and funny Ha Ha) how subject matter of posts change within 5 or 6 entries?

Re: Lawsons 97's ( LC ) + vintage kits
Today I removed the flex hose and carefully split it open from end to end. It looked absolutely pristine inside. The hunt for the culprit continues. two very short rubber connections connecting the electric fuel pump seem unlikely prospects, but we'll see. Waiting on carburetor and fuel pump from Charlie ny.

Lawson: I have seen electric fuel pumps as the source of goo so don't overlook them.

Re: Lawsons 97's ( LC ) + vintage kits
Thanks, Terry. I ran gas into a bottle through the elect fuel pump I have and it looked very clear. I'm gonna change to a new low pressure Airtex anyhow so I'll check all that out.

I got a chance to take Apatchy for a spin this morning as the weather has turned nice. He runs like a champ and has got his old power back. I'm one happy camper again. Life is good.
