Default Across the desert in the snow

570 mile road trip with one of my grandsons and his dad in Old Henry to Wendover Utah then 122 miles straight north on dirt road through Lucin and Grouse Creek Utah then Oakley to Burley Idaho for the night. Then to City of Rocks National Reserve the next day before heading home on the "back roads". Here's the video taken by my 7 year old grandson on his dad's cell phone: https://youtu.be/osgA3yokKrw I think it's pretty good.

And a few pictures taken by grandson and his dad on his cell phone:

Headed north from Wendover Utah on dirt road past Pilot Mountain:

View of sunset after turning around on impassable road to City of Rocks on first day:

City of Rocks National Reserve:

Old rock house in City of Rocks:

Twin Sisters landmark for 250,000 pioneers passing through the reserve from the east to California for the gold rush. Both granite but the left one 100 times older than the right one.

Headed home on the back roads to Utah:

The only picture I took of the last of many trials we had along the way. This one a flat tire on the freeway. I pumped it up as much as my pump would pump (I forgot to charge it before leaving) and the incident manager pumped it up the rest of the way to get me to a tire store to fix it.

Another beautiful trip!
Thank you,
I'm pretty much snow bound right now, expecting another 8-15 inches, oh and it won't melt till April!

Great trip and thanks for the video, especially heading through the snowdrifts.
There's a quick shot in the video of your open glove compartment with two modern gauges. Could you tell us what they are?
I'm also interested if you have an overdrive or what the rear end ratio is in Old Henry? He seems to go along at speed pretty well.
Thanks.

Thank you sir for sharing your trip with us. What a blessing to create those memories and pass the down from generation to generation. You have given something to your grandson that someday he will share with his grandson.
What better way to enjoy our hobby than to share the joy of it with others. We all need to remember to take time to "put away the polish" and drive these vehicles we have invested so much of ourselves in.

Spent some time at Wendover on our last trip west to east. Did you see Wendover Army Air Base while there? The base has one or two commuter flights a day and the Feds have built chain link fence around a lot of the old buildings in the name of "security" It's still mostly in desert weathered state, but the locals are "fixing it up"
It's losing its WW2 patina fast.

Your pictures are great. We have a lovely country.

Just came in from shoveling, enjoyed the ride. I put my truck up for the winter, have over 300 miles on it this summer. With everybody working or off to college, I don't have many drivers. I think that the worst part of poor eyesight.

Oil pressure and water temperature gauges in addition to the stock gauges on the dash board for more detailed information.

Stock 3.78 differential. No overdrive. Engine purrs like a kitten at all speeds.

Thanks for the info. That's a real nice gauge installation.
My '40 is away for the winter but we're getting plans together for trips this spring.
You are an inspiration to all of us to just get out and drive 'em.

When the word "driver" is used this car takes the cake. I'm impressed.

After the war my father had a one hundred dollar deposit on a new Ford. The dealer advised him that he was on a one year or so waiting list. So, needind a car Dad bought a 39 DeSoto from a relative. We had that car for years and drove it all over the western states. Of course that car wasn't that old at the time either.

My hat is off to Old Henry.

Thanks 'Old Henry ! Back here in the northeast the character of our worn-down mountain ranges and tree species are quite different. Thanks to your photos, we get to see your neighborhood which offers a beautiful contrast to our experience.

Your photos remind us that across the country, we have such awesome, beautiful and differing places to visit and live. We are so blessed.

Happy New Year

Craig,

Do you experience any anxiety with respect to the dependability of 'Old Henry' when you take these extended trips out into the wilderness? Do you prepare yourself mentally? I find myself to be ill at ease on long trips into the boonies when driving my old cars - takes some of the enjoyment away when 'white-knuckling' it down the road. I don't experience this when driving my newer cars....

Confidence is born of experience. Since I drive Old Henry every day plus road trips about once a month I have the same confidence in him as anyone has in any car they drive that much. After my 5,000 mile trip to Alaska and back with only a stuck brush on my generator that took one hammer whack to fix, I have full confidence and no anxiety at all about taking Old Henry any time any where any distance.

On this trip, other than the flat tire at the end, all I had was the tail lights go out which I'm working on today. Just found the wire corroded through (note: I still have my 69 year old wiring) and will fix that and will be good to go more and more.

P.S. My overwhelming anxiety comes from thinking about rebuilding an engine. I wouldn't even consider it whereas so many can do it almost with their eyes closed. Again, because of their vast experience doing it.

Much of the driving at higher elevations was down around 17° F. Good that Old Henry has a nice powerful fresh air heater with hot water flow control to keep it nice and toasty warm inside.

Professor,
Do you have your heater hot water flow accessible from the driving compartment? If so, could you describe or show how you accomplished that? Mine is the stock valve on the right side head and, in my case, either too closed or too open for the conditions. Thanks.

I found a valve that screws into the head in place of the stock valve that I can control with a cable and knob from the dashboard.

The black knob on the right is to control the water flow. The knob next to it controls the air flow, then the fan speed, then the defrost.

I'm looking to find the source of that valve that I wanted to screw directly into the head rather than in line of the hose as most, more available do. If I find it I'll post it.

Here's one from Amazon (that has numerous to choose from) that just goes inline in the hose: https://www.amazon.com/Four-Seasons-...HX5F81ND8Q8Y9P

Here's one that screws into the manifold but comes out at a right angle rather than straight like mine: https://www.amazon.com/Four-Seasons-...F31F3QXAWHTS1Q

I'll keep looking.

Thank you for the quick and complete response with pictures. I look forward to hearing about the source of the one that goes directly into the head. It'll be nice to be able to adjust the heat level.

Here's the one I have from O' Reilly's, Murray Part # 74683: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0886&ppt=C0108

It costs at least twice what the others cost but I wanted it as close to stock as possible.

Now I'll see if I can find the control cable. They're not as hard to find.

Ah, Route 66. My very first road trip in Old Henry way back in April 2010: https://www.fordbarn.com/forum/showthread.php?t=57511

What a great trip. We rolled through The City of Rocks last year, some great scenery. Also I rember reading in one of your trips you drove over I believe Bald Mountain pass 10,715 feet. We have never been over Bald Mountain but have been over Beartooth several times 10,947. One time in August and it was snowin at the top.

Craig, thanks for this... since I got my 47 straight SIX running last fall... I removed the heater core until I can get it pressure tested and cleaned to make sure everything is good.. I put caps on the current valves.. but I like the idea to be able to close the valves remotely to avoid heat in the summer.. Still have to replace the blower motor with a 12 volt version, etc.. etc..
One question though.. after seeing all your videos.. What is the object you have attached to the top of your driver's side ash tray?

One question though.. after seeing all your videos.. What is the object you have attached to the top of your driver's side ash tray?

It is a traffic light viewer. It is actually attached in place of one of the window frame screws (I avoid drilling holes if I can.) Because I sit so high in the seat and the top of the windshield is so low, I usually don't have direct line of sight to the traffic control lights. I can usually see them reflected in my hood. But, if they are too close, I can see them in the prism instead of bending over and twisting my neck to see them. It is a vintage gadget quite necessary back in the day when most traffic lights were a single fixture hanging in the middle of the intersection.

No, it's original. But, since I installed it I've seen more installed on top of the horizontal trim rather than behind it which is probably more correct.
