What a pain! Last builder put some kind of stick’um on oil pan gasket & took an hour of cleaning & scraping to clean the block inter face & the oil pan will Probly take longer. Thinking of just replacing w/o anything on the gasket or maybe no gasket just Hi-temp RTV silicone sealer so the next guy or me ( hopefully not) doesn’t curse me like I’m cursing the last guy

Thoughts?

This is why I never use sealer unless it is absolutely necessary. A coating of regular old wheel bearing grease is what I usually use.

If a sealer is used it is easier if used on pan and not block. The block surface should be smooth but the pan will probably have imperfections. The new gasket will stay in place with sealer for reassembly and is much easier to clean off pan than block in the future.

Do like Denny (tubman) says...put some wheel bearing grease on either the pan or the block surface. Place the gasket on the grease, kind of rub the gasket around with pressure applied to make the gasket lie flat on the surface, making sure to line-up the bolt holes, etc. Now, you fit the pan carefully so as not to slide the gasket out of alignment. Surely comes off easy next time. If the gaskets don't seal without pucky, something is wrong with one of the surfaces involved....not clean, warped, gouged, etc. The gaskets do all of the sealing. DD

If the engine is still in the car (and even if it isn't) get some of these; they are incredibly handy. $6.99 at Summit.

They are guide pins. You screw them into four locations and use them to center and hold the gasket, and then in this case to center the oil pan. Then you screw in several of the oil pan bolts and then remove the guide pins.

You can do the same thing by cutting the head off some longer bolts and screwing them into four of the holes. Must be left loose so can be unscrewed by hand. That is what I use

The beauty of these is the flexible center part that you can push the pan over and they "snap" out and hold it up in place. Try that with 4 bolts with the heads cut off. Also, the are slotted so you can use a screwdriver to remove them. For $6.99, it ain't worth screwing around with bolts.
