Has anyone removed the water pipes from Heads to radiator on early V-8 and found both thermostats tilted up on there side? Wouldn't this negate having thermostats and if so what did you do to prevent this from happening. The reason I ask is this is what I found on my 29A today.

Not all that uncommon. I had one of the thermostats in my 59 AB migrate up the hose a few inches. Do a search here and you will find a post about using copper wire to hold them in place.

Thanks for the info on the thermostats moving. Sound like a pretty common thing. Have you tried any of the nos stats? I just bought two of the old butterfly style so I guess I will find out how well they work.

Ed, Scroll down to post # 28 for the wiring solution. The rest of the thread has a good discussion about thermostat theory and application.

Thanks 19Fordy. I have read the posts that you and D. Jones directed me to and appreciate your help. Now that I plan on using the NOS butterfly type stats I will try to find a way to use copper wire to help hold them in place. Hope I wont need to because I hope they are a littler larger diameter and fit in the hose tighter.

Because of the design of NOS thermostats they can fail is the closed position. Might want to keep that in mind.

If you did not notice any problems with the engine's temperature before you took a look at the thermostats, maybe that says you really don't need thermostats ?

Search the forum for threads on thermostats, overheating, coolant, etc. and you'll find more info than anyone can assimilate and more opinions than Carters has Little Liver Pills. The copper wire works well, but I had to use a little sealant to keep the hoses from leaking. Probably used too low a gage. Good luck.

Thanks all for your help. 39topless no I did not have any issues with engine temp, I am replacing the water pipes and had a chance to see stats. Only have a little over 100 miles on engine so really have not driven enough to see any issues. The temp on original gauge. on an 85 degree day, ran just over the halfway mark but that was only for 12 mile drive. This thing is bored .100 and being newly rebuilt I am always watching the gauges.
