41 trucks with 4 cylinder motors

I have only seen two and its been many years ago and would like to see pictures of the motor since I am thinking about building a model of one,since they were in pickups was it also available in a panel truck and how about a sedan delivery.

In the very early '60's I had a neighbor that had a very nice '41 pickup that had a six cylinder flat head engine. I have only seen one '41 with a six, never have seen and/or encountered a four banger in a pickup. I do know where a '40 tonner V8 60 is in Idaho.
It is a former Railway Express truck..
I think that I have read somewhere that the 4 cylinder pickups were sold mostly to very large manufacturing plants for use in or near the plant.. They for damn sure would not be very practical on the street/highway.

The 9N engine is only a 134 so its smaller then the 200 CID Model A/B type engine. They worked good for a small tractor with low gearing but not so good in the trucks when you wanted a bit more speed than the tractor.

My first encounter with one was in a junkyard over 40 years ago and thought a farmer must have installed it and a few years ago one came to a local show,I think the one in the junkyard is still there.

I have seen a 1940 panel with the 4 cylinder and it was originally used for a milk truck in Indiana.

The 4 cyl 134 engine was also used in the 9N ford tractor and also in the pre WWI ford GP jeeps I have also seen them used in stationary powerplants. I had a 1941 GP jeep with this engine and it was actually more peppy than the later MB and GPW jeeps that had 50% more horsepower. 9N tractors are plentiful in my area with many priced at less that $1K. The tractor engines don't have a fuel pump but you can run it in a truck using an electric pump.

I know where a power plant is that is powered by a truck engine, has the lobe for the fuel pump. if you are interested I will ask about it.

I'm curious about where you guys are getting this figure of 134 cu.in. from. When you do the math, the tractor engines figure-out to just a BLONDE hair under 120 cu.in. The 9N, 2N and 8N engines were all as below:

In fact, it's common knowledge to most folks that play with numbers that these bore and stroke dimensions are the same as one bank of any 239 cu.in. V8.....our old friend the 24-stud flathead. DD

134 is a jubilee tractor motor 1953 and later became 172 and 192

Jeez. some serious rounding going on there. 3-3/16 is 3.1875 not 3.19. Cu in is 119.6, cc is 1961 not 2000.

Only commenting on your quoted source, coopman, not your always valid input.

I think people not familiar with fractions can tend to round them which causes problems when trying to calculate clearances and volumes etc.

I saw a post where a guy was asking when ford changed the kingpin diameter from .8125 to .813. They didn't change the diameter someone just rounded the number in a catalogue.

(That's how we spell catalog by the way).

Yep, I got it crossed with the NAA & 600 series Fords. The 9N, 2N, & 8N are all 119.7 CID. They were damn sure a lot smaller CID than the Model A.

Is that the engine I read about that was referred to as the "half-merc"? Think it was a Peterson Publishing all Ford book. Haven't seen it for 40 years but was interesting at the time.

It would have been half a 239 but in cubic inch displacement only. There are a few internal parts that can be interchanged but not a lot. Small end bushings on the con rods and tappet followers come to mind. The local parts store where I grew up in KS always kept Johnson adjustable tappets in stock. I asked if it was for the old flathead trucks and the answer was that it was for the old Ford tractors.

I came across one out in the woods in a trash pile. it was definitely odd. was a panel at one time only the rotted cowl and hood top left. engine and trans were in it. I pulled the transmission off the back because it was the same as v8. they had an adapter to go from the tractor motor to the v8 pattern and a cutout in the transmission for the starter. also in that trash pile was a few model A frames and an indian four gas tank from the late 20's early 30's...

V8coopman, I stand corrected. TM 10-1101 for the Ford GP gives the displacement at 119.5 c.i. The 134 was used in the standardized GPW/MB Willys engine. My bad.
