Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
I'm looking for a bushing remover for a transmission tail shaft on 1950 Ford car 3-speed standard transmission. I want to change this bushing with the transmission in the car. I understand there is a puller made for this job but don't know where to rent one or buy one. I've always had luck with the Ford Barn members--here's hoping.

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
I'm confused. I don't remember a bushing in a transmission at that location. All I can recall is the bearing and seal. If there is a bushing it would most likely be difficult to remove without tearing down the transmission. The seal on the other hand isn't too difficult to pry out and there is a tool for removing them.

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
I never heard of a tool to pull the bushing with the trans assembled in the car. I have heard of pushing the old bushing in with the new one, but I'd never do that.
At best, I've removed just the tailshaft housing, leaving the front of the trans in place. With the housing removed, you can drive the bushing out from either the inside or outside. I used a small chisel to drive out the old one and a piece of wood with a mallet to drive in the new one. After installing the bushing, make sure the yoke glides in smoothly before reinstalling the housing. |

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
Yes, there are(were) Ford special tools for removing the tail housing bushings with trans fully assembled and in the car. It is a hollow tubular thing with thin sidewall and many longitudinal slits, like the expander it is, and a small lip at the inner end for grip at the inner end of bushing. After removing the driveshaft and seal, the tool is compressed with your hand and moved over the tailshaft and inside the bushing until the expander "lip" is inside. The outer end of the tool is solid with a bolt for wrenching against the tailshaft thus pulling the bushing from the housing.
My suggestion is to find a Ford Service Department which has some gray hair and ask about borrowing their tools. |

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
No idea on this transmission, but on some transmissions you can use a slide hammer with a jaw attachment that fits inside the bushing and catches on the inside lip.

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
This illustrates why your profile should give a general idea of where you live...one of our V8 club members has one of these things, and probably there are several people on the barn who have them...most old car people are very helpful.
I don't have one solely because early Fords don't have tail shaft housings! |

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
Early Fords in my book refers to real Henry's, up through '47-8...Except for engine, the '49's were the first modern Fords, with architecture that is still recognizable on the few rear drive cars still being built. If you could show a 1949 Ford Dealer mechanic a late Mustang or Crown Vic in need of a new tail bushing, he'd know what to do! If you sent a late Mustang mechanic to look over a transmission leak under a '48 Ford...Holy Cow!

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
rbecraft, Most of us retired (or near retirement) mechanics have these tools in our boxes. They are probably still available from the tool trucks. Look for a a Snap-On, Mac, Matco, or Cornwell truck parked at a shop and ask. At least look at the picture in their catalog and then check out a pawn shop or used tool dealer. Or try ebay or craigslist.

I too have referred to the '48 Ford as the last "REAL" Ford for umpteen years now, and for the same reasons. DD

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
There is an oil return groove at the bottom, outside the bush, in the tail housing.
Pull the seal, warm up the housing-not glowing or real hot, hook at the bottom so you don't score the bore for the bush. While still warm the new bush will go in easy-especially if you cool it 1st. Lots less invasive than removing housing-ask me how I know. |

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
JWL is correct, I used that tool many times on C-4 or C-6 trannys in the 70's before my parts career. I can still see it hanging in the tool room of my first dealership!

There are various sizes of these tools. One size does not fit all.

Re: Transmission tail shaft bushing remover
I did one on a 59 and took the housing off and knocked it out to back.
